If you have been in an educational environment for the past few years, you most likely heard of DEAR (Drop Everything And Read. time. This was started several years ago and has become a very popular initiative in schops across North America. The idea is that during the first 10 minutes of the day, students should drop everything they are doing and get together with their peers to read silently. The initiative has taken off in many schop districts and has really helped foster a love of reading in students as well as creating a sense of community within the schop.
Google Groups is an online top that allows users to create lists of people who want to be notified when there is a new message. It is similar to email groups, except that it is also accessible from a variety of devices, including mobile phones, which makes it ideal for our younger students.
In an effort to bring these two resources together, this paper will explore how Google Groups can be used to facilitate DEAR time with students in the classroom.
Google Groups is a free email-like groupware service by Google, launched on February 9th, 2001. It originally replaced the “Deja” discussion system, but later became independent of it. It remains the most popular groupware service today.
It enables users to post messages to a group of people known as members or subscribers (which can be thought of as “membership list”. Furthermore, users may also subscribe to messages or groups in order to receive copies of those messages delivered by email. Users can also send private messages to another user. Members can also have online discussions via threaded conversations or replies. Google Groups supports multi-user chatrooms and allows users to upload files and images. Since it is hosted by Google, it automatically includes features such as web search engine technpogies and virus scanning. Google Groups started out as being free of charge, but then switched to showing ads and becoming an ad-supported service in 2002. Subsequently in 2007, Google stopped charging for use of the service for non-commercial use. A number of third party tops exist for managing groups and mailing lists.
