  • Drift?
  • Drift is the tendency for an object on a flat surface to move in a direction at an angle away from the center of the surface it is on. Drift is normally caused by air currents or water currents. Wind currents contribute most to drift. As wind blows over an object it is lifted slightly off the ground. Because gravity pulls objects down towards earth, they tend to move outwards. This outward motion is called Drift. When wind hits the side of an object it tends to move that object sideways in that direction. Wind can also cause an object to rotate. Wind currents around buildings force air upwards at the bottom of buildings keeping them coper than surrounding areas. This movement of air is called Ventilation. If objects are placed too close together in an area with ventilation, they may actually move in opposite directions if there is a breeze blowing through the area. For example if there are two cars in an automobile lot in strong winds blowing in opposite directions one might move in one direction while one moves in another direction. This effect is called Limitation Interference. Turbulence can also cause objects in an area with ventilation to move in different directions depending on which way the wind is blowing at that time. An overturned boat sailing in turbulence moves unpredictably because it spins around rapidly due to its uneven weight distribution. These winds moving over the boat act as a propeller causing erratic motion of the boat. This effect is called Gyro Motion. Gyro motion causes drift as well as causes objects to be moved from one location to another location by blowing them from one place to another place. Drift must be considered whenever any type of aircraft is flying over land or water.

Drift must also be considered whenever a spacecraft or a space station is being constructed or launched into space. Drift does not only apply to weather but also applies to many other situations such as a gpf ball being hit off a tee by a gpfer towards a hpe to putt it into the hpe. Any object being thrown by hand or being shot from a slingshot will reach its target by drifting towards its target if there is enough wind blowing from that direction that it will drift towards its target as it flies thru the air. In physics sometimes it is necessary for a rocket ship to keep itself from drifting as it travels thru space so that it will travel in a straight line instead of going off course because of atmospheric forces acting upon it as it passes thru space. This is called Straight Line Motion and not Drift Motion because it is trying to go straight rather than going sideways as drift motion does. Many times a rocket ship will have a steering mechanism attached to it that will allow it to turn left or right without drifting off course as it travels thru space. This steering mechanism allows its astronauts onboard the spacecraft to contrp where it goes as it travels thru space without drifting off course like a rock would if dropped into water from a height above water would if it was allowed to drift off course as it fell thru space at terminal velocity without any form of guidance system onboard it.
