DEAR Inventory was developed by Dr. Arnpd Lazarus in the 60s. He developed his research based on the fact that the traditional psychotherapy methods could not be fully effective in treating people with personality disorders. The reason is that there are too many barriers, such as resistances, which prevent people from getting help. Therefore, he developed a method of therapy that would remove those barriers and allow for a better engagement between the therapist and the patient.
DEAR stands for Describe, Express, Assert, Reinforce. The therapist will use this method to help the patient to express their feelings related to the past or present situation. In addition, they also will describe what they think of the situation at hand. The next step is that the therapist will then help them to express how they feel about the situation. The final step is that they will come up with an assertive statement so that the patient can understand their own emotions and be able to overcome any barriers that may be preventing them from progressing further with therapy (Lazarus.
awork is a piece of software designed for DEAR Inventory therapy. It contains three main parts. the client part, the therapist part, and the auditor part. The therapist has access to the client part of awork after he/she completes a brief training. The client part allows the client to write down notes or draw picture of their thoughts as well as provide audio files if they wish to (Zhang. On the other hand, the auditor part of awork allows the auditor to monitor what is going on inside of awork. It allows him/her to view all notes and sessions made by the client as well as analyze what’s going on with awork (Zhang. As mentioned earlier, the therapist part of awork is used by therapists who have completed a brief training. It gives therapists all necessary information on how to use DEAR Inventory for their clients (Cohen et al.. For this paper, I will mainly focus on how both parts work together for DEAR Inventory therapy.
In order to integrate DEAR Inventory and awork, first we need to take a look at what they are separately. There are two parts of DEAR Inventory. One is DEAR Inventory itself and the other one is awork. DEAR Inventory is a set of worksheets that help patients integrate their thoughts into three parts. Describe, Express, Assert, and Reinforce. Awork helps therapists to work with clients in four steps. Create Session, Generate Content, Reflect on Content, and Finalize Session (Cohen et al.. After integrating these two parts together, we can see that they combine together perfectly and complement each other very well. This means that when patients use DEAR Inventory worksheets, it will help them integrate their thoughts into three parts while using awork will help them reflect on their thoughts by generating content and creating sessions (Cohen et al..
When integrating these two parts together, we can see that there are many benefits that come out of it. I will go through multiple benefits that allow us to see why integration of DEAR Inventory and awork is so beneficial. First, because DEAR Inventory can help people sort out their thoughts into three parts, it can help them understand their feelings better. Because they understand their feelings better, it allows them to feel better about themselves and helps them to feel less anxious or depressed when it comes to certain situations (Cohen et al.. Next, because awork can help them generate content and create sessions, it also helps them understand their thoughts and feelings better as well. When they get more ideas on what’s going on in their mind, they can easily understand their own emotions and recognize what they want to do next (Cohen et al.. Having these benefits from both DEAR Inventory and awork allows people who suffer from personality disorders to feel better about themselves and feel confident enough to move forward with their lives (Cohen et al..
Overall, when trying to integrate DEAR Inventory and awork together, we can see that it is very beneficial in helping people who suffer from personality disorders. Through DEAR Inventory worksheets and awork software combined together, we can see how both parts compliment each other very well. Patients are able to sort out their thoughts into three parts as well as generate content with aworks tops to help therapists work with them in therapy sessions. These sessions are conducted in four steps. Create Session, Generate Content, Reflect on Content, and Finalize Session (Cohen et al.. By combining these two parts together, it has helped many patients who suffer from personality disorders feel better about themselves and progress further with their lives (Cohen et al..
