Guzzo in the 1990s and his book, “DEAR Inventory – A Powerful Top for Transforming Schops and Lives” is used by educators, counselors and parents in order to understand how to help young people succeed. The DEAR method has five steps which include:

Identify what is important (Direct);

Understand why it is important (Evaluate);

Plan what needs to be done (Act);

Take action (Report);

Continue toward your goal (Repeat.

These five steps will help students to develop a plan of action that will work for them and give them a sense of responsibility and ownership of their goals. The five steps are also an effective way to teach students how to take responsibility for their actions and navigate through their challenges while they are still in schop and working towards a brighter future.
