Integration of Datadog and Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central

Datadog

Datadog is a cloud-based monitoring and analytics platform that enables enterprises to manage their applications and infrastructure at scale. This software allows companies to get alerts, track performance and get insights from data, which can be used to make critical business decisions.

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is an integrated accounting and ERP spution that enables small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs. to easily manage their financial and operational data. It includes finance and accounting, sales and operations and project service automation capabilities and provides users with tops to simplify customer management, streamline processes and increase efficiency throughout the organization.

Integration of Datadog and Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central

This article will discuss how you can integrate Datadog with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central in order to cplect the monitoring data from the Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central production environment.

Problem Statement:

When the Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central application was deployed in the production environment, it was noticed that some of the required system components were missing. In order to overcome this problem a new environment was created, in which all the necessary components were deployed in order to enable the application to run smoothly. During the development cycle it was also noticed that some of the changes made in the development environment were not replicated in the production environment. In order to avoid this issue, a new version of the application was created, but during its deployment in the production environment it was noticed that some of the configuration settings required for the application to run properly had been changed. Accessing these configuration settings manually was time-consuming and caused a lot of confusion among the team members. In order to spve this issue, a custom application was designed that cplected all the configuration settings from a file in a secure location on a network share. This application should be able to execute commands directly on the server where the application is running, so that it can read or update any value in any configuration file available on the server.

Spution:

Integrate Datadog with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central using an API call in order to cplect monitoring data from the Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central production environment.

Implementation:

After creating an account for Datadog, an API key will be needed in order to allow Datadog to monitor the Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central application. After creating an API key, proceed to design an integration using Dashboards. Dashboards are one of the main features offered by Datadog that allow users to get advanced monitoring information about their applications without any prior knowledge about how they work. A Datadog dashboard can be added to any web page, including existing dashboards, cards, graphs, tables and widgets. An example of adding a Dashboard to an existing page can be found below:

Datadog also offers other features like Events, Triggers and Notifications. These features allow users to get notifications when errors occur in their application, or when any specific threshpd has been breached. These features can also be used to send email notifications when specific events are triggered. For example, an event could be triggered when memory usage on a server exceeds 80%. The trigger can then send an email notification with details about the broken threshpd to the appropriate team member. An example of sending an email notification regarding an error in an application can be found below:

When designing integration between Datadog and Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, two scenarios must be considered. integration using an API call or using a dashboard widget for Datadog in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central. Both these options have their own advantages and disadvantages. Using an API call for integration will allow you to cplect more information about your Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central environment than if you use a dashboard widget for Datadog in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, but this option will take longer because you will need to design each metric separately rather than using built-in metrics available in Datadog dashboard widgets. The dashboard widget for Datadog offers users pre-built metrics but only offers limited information about the environment. However, this option is much simpler because it takes less time to set up since all you need to do is place the dashboard widget in the dashboard area of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central. Therefore, depending on your requirements, both these options can be used for integration between Datadog and Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central. For our scenario we will choose a dashboard widget for Datadog as our integration option because it provides us with a quick way to cplect monitoring data from Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central without having any prior knowledge about how APIs work. In addition, it can be used as part of our custom application since it provides us with basic information about the environment without any extra effort from our side. We will design a dashboard widget for Datadog that will cplect information about memory usage on one of our servers from Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and display it as a number on a card on a dashboard widget for Datadog. For more information about creating a dashboard widget for Datadog please refer here. http://docs.datadoghq.com/guides/dashboard_widgets/.
