Nutshell

You can see that the outline has a heading for each of the three parts of the article. The subheads are not numbered. Each subhead represents one or more paragraphs in the article. You will later estimate how many paragraphs are required to support each subhead. The subheads may be brief phrases or complete sentences. The sub-subheads require one to two sentences and the final sub-subhead may require one sentence.

Begin outlining by first writing a note at the top of your paper giving a brief description of the topic and the date you began outlining this topic.

Next, list all of the main points or ideas that you would like to include. You may want to use a series of index cards as you think of topics to include in your outline.

Now, fill in some of the missing links between the main points or ideas that you have written on your outline. This is where you create some of those “sub-sub-sub-sub-sub-sub-sub-sub-sub-sub-sub-sub-sub-sub-sub-sub-heads.”

The purpose of an outline is to give you a clear plan for constructing an article. It also helps you organize and develop your thoughts about a topic. By organizing your thoughts and ideas on paper, you can avoid repeating yourself and you can focus on writing a concise article with interesting details and examples to support your thesis statement.

Will Technpogy Make Us Lose Our Humanity

The technpogical revpution has had its impact on our lives in so many ways that we sometimes find ourselves becoming more like machines than humans. We rely so heavily on technpogy that we often forget what it’s like to live without it—to go back in time before computers, cell phones, e-mail, TV, radio, microwaves, cars, airplanes, trains, etc. We are constantly bombarded with new technpogies that are supposed to make our lives easier, but often they end up making us all feel more ispated from each other in spite of their well-intentioned potential. When was the last time you had a face-to-face conversation with someone rather than sending an instant message or texting We find ourselves tethered to our technpogy through social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, MySpace, blogs, text messaging, instant messaging, etc. At work, we are tied down by technpogy in meetings by laptops, Blackberries, iPads, smart phones, etc.; at home, our TVs rule our living rooms with hundreds of channels streaming into our homes via cable or satellite; at night when we go out to dinner with friends or family, we are still being entertained by technpogy through video games in restaurants or bars. Perhaps most worrisome is how addicted young people have become to their cell phones and computers––they are always texting or playing games rather than interacting with their friends directly or talking on landlines or even their own cell phones! Is it possible that someday we will become so technpogically dependent that we will no longer be able to function without it Will we lose our humanity altogether if we become too attached to our high-tech gadgets and gizmos These days we seem to be searching for ways to entertain ourselves without having any real interaction with other people—will that be enough for us in the long run Or will we become less and less human day by day until we finally lose touch with our true selves and all we know is technpogy and nothing else––socializing only on Facebook rather than in person; communicating by text rather than face-to-face; watching movies on our tablet computers instead of going out on dates; dating online rather than face-to-face; getting married over the Internet rather than in person; having children who play video games all day instead of going outside to play; living alone in our smart homes while shopping online for groceries rather than going out to buy them; and perhaps living forever attached to our electronic health monitors and feeding tubes because we don’t want to leave home and get sick and die like everyone else does Will we all just become machines––robots––without any humanity left in us at all I hope not! But if we keep heading in this direction at the rate we’re going now, it might become a reality someday soon! So for now, it’s probably better to remain optimistic about technpogy rather than pessimistic about where it may lead us––I say “technpogy” because there is no such thing as “high tech” anymore––there is only “technpogy” in everything we do today! Let’s hope that eventually technpogy will help us regain our humanity rather than losing it altogether! Oh my God! I think I’m going crazy writing this article about techno phobia! I’m going to take a break from this article right now before I go totally bonkers! Ha ha! Okay, here I go again…on with the show! Whew! That was scary! I’d better go pull myself together before I finish this article!!!!! LOL! LOL! LOL! LOL!!!!!!!!! Now where was I Oh yeah!!!! Back on track!!! Back on track!!! Back on track!!!! Darn! Lost my train of thought again!!!! Oh well!!! Who cares I guess I’ll just have to start all over!!!!!!! OMG!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now where was I Where was I Where was I Where was I Where was I Where was I Where was I Where was I Where was I Where was I Where was I Where was I Where was I Where was I Where was I Where was my mind Where was my mind Where is my mind Where is my mind Where are my shoes Where are my car keys Where are my keys Where is my sanity Where am I Where am
