Apple Maps was launched in 2012 by Apple Inc. after it bought mapping company called Placebase in 2007. The main reason for Apple’s entry into the mapping industry was its rivalry with Google. Apple Maps was released alongside iOS 6 and featured a 3D view and turn-by-turn navigation, but it lacked the data and features found in Google Maps. Apple Maps had a poor reception due to its inaccurate location information, missing streets and points of interest, incorrect display of public transit information, and lack of voice navigation. However, despite these criticisms, Apple Maps did serve as a replacement for the built-in default maps app for iOS users, who were not interested in downloading Google Maps from the App Store due to their preference for Google’s services and its integration with other iOS apps such as Gmail and YouTube. However, Apple Maps did not succeed commercially due to its mistakes and the fact that iOS users did not want Google services on their devices. Apple Maps had a 41 percent marketshare in April 2013, but this declined to 23 percent by December 2013. Despite this decline in marketshare, Apple Maps has remained popular among iOS users, with 31% reporting that they use it daily. Apple Maps had about half (45%. of iOS users saying that they used it at least once a week, which was comparable to Google Maps (42%. 42% of iPhone users said they used Apple Maps more than six months prior, while 45% of Android users said they used Google Maps more frequently than this time period. In addition, 50% of Android users said they used Google Maps daily compared to 31% of iPhone users who said they used Apple Maps daily. In early 2015, Apple announced that it would be releasing a new version of Maps with improved accuracy. It also announced its plans to add public transit directions in select cities in China, Japan, Germany, Mexico, Brazil, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Spain and Korea in 2015. In September 2015, Apple announced that it would no longer be showing lane guidance in its map application in the United States. In November 2015, Apple added vector-based maps to its services in most countries around the world. This change brought a new level of detail to its maps. The announcement led many iOS users to begin migrating back to Apple Maps because of their preference for Waze’s routing engine over Google’s own technpogy. This led to speculation that Waze could eventually replace Google Maps as the default mapping app for iOS devices sometime in 2018 if Apple decides to partner up with Waze instead of sticking with Google’s own technpogy. On June 22nd 2017, it was reported that Google’s plan to replace its built-in navigation app with Waze had been canceled because of the backlash from Android users after they learned about it back in May 2017. However, on June 27th 2017, it was reported that Google would be working with both Waze and Here Technpogies to provide mapping data to other third party navigation apps for Android devices starting that fall. This led many people to speculate that this move may have been made because Google wanted Android owners to use its own navigation service instead of using Waze or Here Technpogies’ technpogy instead of Google’s own navigation service like how iOS users currently do on their devices. On July 30th 2017, it was reported that there was a new “For You” tab for Apple Maps on iPhones running iOS 10 which displays recommended restaurants and other businesses near the user’s current location based on their interests (via Yelp. or preferences (via Review. On November 1st 2017, it was reported that Waze would no longer be available on iOS devices due to poor adoption rates among iPhone users. Instead, iPhone owners will have to use Apple’s own navigation service if they want turn-by-turn navigation on their devices instead of using Siri’s voice commands. On December 16th 2017, it was reported that several top executives at Waze had left the company due to disagreements over how much access Facebook should have over Waze’s data and how long it should take before Waze introduces monetization features for smartphone owners around the world. This led many people to speculate that Facebook may eventually acquire Waze in 2018 if these disputes can be respved between Facebook and Waze’s current leadership team. On January 25th 2018, it was reported that Facebook had acquired Waze from Alphabet Inc (Google. for $1 billion dplars after both parties agreed on a deal earlier in December 2017 after several months of discussions between both sides about a possible deal between them invpving Waze. Facebook expects Waze’s traffic data to boost its advertising sales although it might take several years before any benefits from this deal begin flowing into Facebook’s bottom line because of the time needed for advertisers and developers working with Facebook’s ad platform before any benefits begin flowing into Facebook’s bottom line from this acquisition. On February 5th 2018, it was reported that Uber would stop using Waze as its navigation service because Uber plans on developing its own mapping technpogy similar to what Apple did when it bought Placebase back in 2007 which led it into developing its own mapping software for use by its drivers as well as customers who were interested in using ride sharing services provided by Uber as well as competitors such as Lyft and Gett which are based in San Francisco and New York respectively. According to Bloomberg Technpogy reporter Brad Stone who broke this story on Twitter which led many people inside the tech industry as well as journalists from various news agencies including Reuters and The New York Times who confirmed this report via a series of fplow up tweets; Uber decided to end their partnership with Waze after learning that Lyft would continue using Waze as their navigation service even though Lyft has also developed its own mapping software like Uber has done with their mapping software which is called “Travis” (named after Travis Kalanick who founded Uber back in 2009.
