PayPal is an electronic payment system that allows payments and money transfers to be made through the Internet. PayPal was founded by Max Levchin, Peter Thiel, Luke Nosek, Ken Howery, Elon Musk, and Max's brother, Mark Levchin. PayPal is headquartered in San Jose, California, United States. It facilitates payments between private individuals or businesses through an email account or through its website. PayPal is not a bank and does not issue any kind of credit cards. In fact, it does not have financial relationships with the majority of its users. Customers must have a PayPal account in order to use the service to send payments from other users or businesses. The company also accepts credit cards, debit cards, bank transfers, and checks. PayPal can be used to pay for goods and services either at a physical store using a mobile device or on a website using a credit card or a bank account. The fee ranges from 2% to 4%, depending on whether the buyer pays with a credit card or a bank account. PayPal has been used for fundraising campaigns for social networking start-ups such as Kickstarter and crowdfunding campaigns such as Indiegogo. In addition, PayPal is included in various other sites, such as Facebook's 'Pay with PayPal' button[2] and Blogger[3]. On June 8, 2015, eBay announced that its subsidiary company Braintree would acquire the payment processor Venmo for US$800 million. As of June 2016, PayPal has 200 million active accounts in 190 markets around the world.[4] It operates in 203 countries and territories throughout the world.
