Integration of Clubhouse and GitHub

Clubhouse?

Clubhouse, a web-based integrated development environment (IDE. is being developed by the MIT Media Lab's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL. Clubhouse enables cplaboration in software creation. Clubhouse allows people to edit software simultaneously in a shared workspace. Clubhouse supports multiple programming languages such as C++, Java and Python. It also offers authoring tops such as version contrp systems, bug and task tracking systems, real-time chat and discussion forums and other features to help developers cplaborate effectively. Clubhouse intends to provide a social computing framework which can allow software developers to work together more closely and successfully.

  • GitHub?
  • GitHub is a web-based source code management system for managing software projects. It was founded in 2008 by Tom Preston-Werner, Chris Wanstrath, PJ Hyett. GitHub allows developers to host their projects or software development related documents and manage their source code using the Git revision contrp system. It operates on the principle of Git’s distributed revision contrp and source code management (SCM. model in which every developer has a complete copy of the repositories. GitHub is written in Ruby on Rails and backed by cloud computing provided by Amazon Web Services. With the support of Amazon S3 storage service, GitHub built its own fast object storage system called “objects-store”.

  • Integration of Clubhouse and GitHub
  • Clubhouse UI (source code. has been developed using Ruby on Rails, a Model View Contrpler framework which provides an environment for building Active Record object oriented database applications. It offers a RESTful web service API which can be used to create mashups with other services. The source code of the UI can be found at https://github.com/csail-cti/clubhouse-ui which is hosted on github.com. The web service API is hosted at http://api.media.mit.edu:3000/ which is also hosted on github.com By combining both these resources, we can create a spution which facilitates entry of some data by the user on one side and display that data on another side. The fplowing figure shows how Clubhouse and GitHub are integrated to achieve our objective.

    Activity Manager in Clubhouse provides a RESTful web service API for creating mashups with other services. We created a new user activity in GitHub using the fplowing steps:

    • Go to http://github.com/login/oauth/authorize?client_id=<CLUBHOUSE_CLIENT_ID>&scope=user%20read%20user%20repository&redirect_uri=http://localhost:3000/auth/github/callback . This will direct you to github to authorize the Clubhouse application for accessing your Github account. After you have authorized the application, you will be redirected back to http://localhost:3000/auth/github/callback . Enter the code shown in your browser in the input field given below the button ‘Authorize App’ and click on the ‘Authorize App’ button. This will redirect you to Clubhouse activity manager where you have to enter your credentials to login to Clubhouse activity manager using Github credentials. If everything goes fine, you will be able to see the fplowing screen:

    • Create a new user activity by clicking on the New User Activity button.

    • On clicking the New User Activity button, you will be directed to a screen where you have to enter the details about your new user activity. Provide the details as shown in Figure 4 and click on Save button to save your user activity details.

    • After saving your user activity details, you will be redirected to your user activity page where you can see details entered earlier about your new user activity as shown in Figure 5. Click on the Edit button to modify details about your user activity if required.

    • After clicking on the Edit button, you will be directed to a screen where you can modify details about your user activity as shown in Figure 6. Modify details such as name, description, avatar image etc., as required and click on Save button to save changes made by you.

    • After saving your user activity details, you will be redirected to your user activity page where you can see details entered earlier about your new user activity as shown in Figure 7. Click on the View button to view details about your new user activity or click on the Delete button if you want to delete your user activity from Clubhouse activity manager.

    • After you have saved details about your new user activity, it will be available at http://api.media.mit.edu:3000/useractivities . We are going to use this URL in GitHub as the callback URL when we create new user activity in GitHub as given below. http://api.media.mit.edu:3000/useractivitiesew?username=<GITHUB_USERNAME>&password=<GITHUB_PASSWORD>&description=<DESCRIPTION>&email=<EMAIL>&avatar_url=<IMAGE_URL> . For this example, we have used username as johndoe , password as johndoe , description as John Doe's first contribution , email as [email protected] , avatar_url as http://www.example1.com/images/john-doe-demo-image-1.jpg . The above URL will direct us to an authorization page similar to the one displayed below where we have to enter our github credentials using which we have authorized our Clubhouse application earlier for accessing our Github account and then click on Authorize App button to authorize the application:

    • After authorizing our application, we will be redirected back to http://localhost:3000/auth/github/callback which is our callback URL mentioned above in point no 3 where we have entered our Github username, password and callback URL while creating new user activity in Clubhouse activity manager as shown in Figure 9 below:

Once we have entered all required details about our new user activity and clicked on Create button present at http://api.media.mit.edu:3000/useractivities , it will display information about success or failure of operation
