Clubhouse is an exemplary program that specifically targets individuals with disabilities who do not fit into the traditional service system. Clubhouse provides a unique environment where people with disabilities are able to participate in job training, community integration, and recreation activities. In addition, Clubhouse offers support and counseling services for its members. The non-profit organization was started in 1991 by Al Kagan, an individual with a disability. The first Clubhouse opened in San Francisco, California and has since expanded to other locations across the country. There are now over 30 Clubhouses nationwide.
DEAR Inventory is an assessment top used to determine a person’s needs and to match them with appropriate community resources. “DEAR” stands for “Differential Diagnosis, Evaluation of skills and Resources, Assisting and Referral” (Kagan & Kagan, 1997. The top is used alongside the Social Security Administration to determine if a person should be eligible for vocational rehabilitation services. It is intended to provide a fair, uniform way for case workers to consider and evaluate their clients’ needs.
Clubhouse was able to integrate the DEAR Inventory into their daily program activities by asking members and staff to complete the assessment as a part of their participation in programs such as community integration. Staff completed the assessment after every club meeting or activity so that they would have an idea of what each member needed for the fplowing club meeting or activity. For example, if a member has been attending club meetings for several weeks and he has expressed his interest in attending a “Dancing with the Stars” event in the community, staff will use the DEAR Inventory to determine if there is anything that may prevent him from participating in this event (e.g., transportation issues. If there are no concerns with the assessment, then staff will use this information to help plan the event.
The integration of DEAR Inventory and Clubhouse provides many benefits to both parties. As discussed earlier, it allows Clubhouse to provide better service and programming for its members. It also helps integrate members with disabilities into mainstream society by giving them opportunities to become more independent. For example, if a member wants to attend a particular movie at a local theater but DEAR Inventory suggests that she does not have the transportation resources to do so, Clubhouse will help find another means of transportation for her. Integration of Clubhouse and DEAR Inventory helps these individuals gain self-confidence and self-esteem while providing them with a sense of purpose.
Overall, I believe that Clubhouse did an excellent job integrating the DEAR Inventory into their daily program activities. This integration provided members with more opportunities for community integration because they were able to receive additional support from staff in order to participate in events outside of Clubhouse.
