Amazon SNS is a web service that makes it easy to setup, operate, and administer a push messaging infrastructure. With Amazon SNS, you can easily connect applications running on Amazon EC2 with end-users operating mobile devices and PCs. Applications can send messages or data "pushes" to end users' devices in real time. Amazon SNS supports a number of protocps including email, HTTP, HTTPS, HTTPS/TLS, JMS, Kafka, RabbitMQ, WebSockets, and SQS. You can use Amazon SNS to replace custom message queues or third-party push services such as Pusher.com or Parse.ly's PubSubHubbub-based push service. Amazon SNS is integrated with Amazon SQS so that you can use a single API call to send a message that is delivered both as an Amazon SNS notification and an Amazon SQS message.
The integration of Cliniko and Amazon SNS enables Cliniko users to send push notifications to their customers/patients. Cliniko creates a unique endpoint (alias. for each user/patient which is then stored in Amazon SNS. This alias will be used for sending messages using Amazon SNS API. This feature can be enabled in the Cliniko settings by going to Notifications -> Websites & Push Notifications tab. In this tab, there is a list of endpoints to choose from. Each clinician is given a unique endpoint associated with his/her user ID. There is no limit on the number of endpoints created.
When a clinician wants to send out a notification campaign he/she may do so on the Cliniko website by going to the Notifications tab under My Profile. The clinician may also send out campaigns through the API if required. The Cliniko app is also capable of sending push notifications when new appointments are created or when a reminder is due for an existing appointment.
Once the clinician has created his/her notification campaign he/she has to click on the Send Notification button to send out the campaign. This will launch the Amazon SNS conspe where he/she can see the list of endpoints created for his/her clinic (clinicians. By selecting any one of these endpoints he/she can configure what type of notifications will be sent out (Appointment Reminders or New Appointments.
Notifications are sent out via Amazon SNS using both Email Protocp (SMTP. and HTTP Protocp (HTTPS. Cliniko supports two types of notifications. Automatic and Manual. Automatic notifications are sent automatically whenever an event occurs whereas Manual notifications are not sent automatically but have to be triggered manually by the clinician. For instance, whenever a new appointment is created or an existing one expires, automatic notifications will be sent out automatically without any human intervention whereas manual notifications will only be sent out by clicking on Send Notification button from the Notifications tab under My Profile page or by calling the API function Send Push Notifications (https://api.cliniko.com/v3/pushNotifications.
