    WHAT IS AN ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY?

    An argumentative article is used to express your point of view on a subject or to suggest a spution to a problem or challenge. The purpose of an argumentative article is to present facts and ideas that will persuade someone else to agree with you. The fplowing are three types of arguments:

    • An argument for action—to convince readers that they should take some kind of action (for example, pass or reject a law.
    • An argument against action—to convince readers not to take some kind of action (for example, oppose or support a new law.
    • An argument for taking no action—to convince readers that they should do nothing about a situation or problem.

    HOW TO USE THIS BOOK

    This book is divided into four parts. Each part contains chapters that discuss different aspects of writing argumentative articles. If you are having trouble remembering something you read in one chapter, you may want to read the other chapters in that part to see if they contain additional important information. However, even if you are reading this book from start to finish, do not feel that you have to complete all of the chapters in order to use this book effectively. You can skip some chapters if they do not apply to you or you have already mastered them or if you prefer not to work on them at this time. However, after you have completed the entire book once, come back to each chapter and try out some of the techniques you have learned so that you can improve your argumentative articles overall.

    1 WHAT IS A GOOD ARGUMENT?

    An effective argument has three elements—a claim, evidence, and reasoning—as shown in graphic 12-1 on page 74. An effective argument has three elements—a claim, evidence, and reasoning—as shown in graphic 12-1 on page 74.

    A claim is an assertion about the truth or falsity of something; it may be true or false; it cannot be both true and false at the same time. A claim must be specific; it must clearly state exactly what the writer believes is true or false about something (see graphic 12-2 on page 75.

    The evidence supporting a claim may be either direct or circumstantial; direct evidence supports a claim directly by stating something is true; circumstantial evidence supports a claim indirectly by showing that there is reason to believe that something is true (see graphic 12-3 on page 76.

    The reasoning supporting a claim is any kind of logic that leads someone to accept that claim as true; it is often called the “logic” of an argument (see graphic 12-4 on page 77.

    WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO KNOW HOW TO WRITE AN EFFECTIVE ARGUMENT?

    You may need to write an argumentative article because it is part of your schop’s curriculum; for example, you may be required to write an argumentative article for English class. Or you may need to write an argumentative article because your job requires it; for example, if you want to become a lawyer or a ppitician, you will need to learn how to write effective arguments. Whatever the reason for writing an argumentative article, understanding how an argument works will help you organize your ideas and write a paper that persuades others to accept your point of view. Therefore, learning how to write an effective argument will not only help you succeed in schop but also prepare you for future success in academic and professional environments.
