GoToTraining is an online application delivered using web conferencing technpogy from Cisco Systems to be used for training and education purposes. GoToTraining offers planning tops for educators to create courses, set up meetings, schedule coursework and track student progress. Instructors can use GoToTraining to present PowerPoint presentations, PDF documents, and recordings from other sources such as video files and audio files. Students can ask questions during the class session in real time. They can also submit questions ahead of the class or via email. Students get instant feedback on submitted questions.
GoToTraining also offers some features similar to virtual worlds such as Second Life such as chat rooms, avatars and private chat sessions with avatars.
GoToTraining allows instructors to record sessions and make them available for review at a later time. Instructors can also select specific students to appear on the screen during recording sessions.
It is now possible to integrate WebEx messaging into GoToTraining classes. This enables teachers to use the message boards to communicate with their students directly from the GoToTraining class session screen without having to leave their course screen or interrupt their presenters. This feature can be useful for live presentations because it opens up many new possibilities for one-on-one communication with students without having to leave the presenters' screen. This means that teachers can keep students informed about changes in course content or due dates for assignments without interrupting the flow of their presentation. Teachers can also use this feature for one-on-one discussions with individual students. By leaving the course screen he/she doesn't have to stop presenting to do this. This feature is especially useful if one wants to move a question already asked by a student to an appropriate place in the presentation. In addition, once the discussion with a student has ended, that student's computer screen can be returned to the class presentation automatically while keeping all other students' screens up-to-date with current information throughout the teaching process. This way other students are not distracted by side conversations between teachers and students. The teacher can still see all screens in his/her presentation window even when talking to a student directly but is able to hide the student's screen from everyone else in the class. When finished talking with a particular student, teachers can return that student's screen to view again for all students in the class through the Message Board screen without leaving their course screen or interrupting their presenters. The message boards allow teachers to communicate directly with students without having to leave their course screen or interrupting their presenters…
As mentioned in previous posts within these pages – written by John Appleby & Ginny Buckley – I've been using both technpogies for quite some time now & find them invaluable tops within my learning management system (LMS. mix! They're particularly helpful when it comes to synchronous learning (a la classroom interaction via webinar. although they're equally effective when used as asynchronous training resources (e.g., material presented by one person that the learners subsequently review on their own time. However, as Ginny points out in her blog post. "Using WebEx Training – A New Paradigm Shift?", there's another benefit in integrating these two products together which is worthy of consideration…it's a matter of visual appeal! That is, when learners are accustomed to seeing what they're reading coupled with what they're listening to on the same screen then it makes sense for them to experience this in the context of their online training too! [The "look = read = listen" equation] So, how does one do this? Well, here's how I do it…first of all, I log onto GoToTraining & open up my course so that my avatar appears along with my classmates' avatars onscreen… Next, I click on my avatar & either choose "My Profile" or "My Settings". If I choose "My Profile", I'm presented with a profile screen that identifies me by name & shows my picture along with my email address & any comments I've made that others have seen…if I choose "My Settings" I'm presented with another page that shows my user ID & password along with my name…moving right along…I click on the Messages link at the top of my profile page & am then presented with 3 options. Message Board, Chat & Voice Chat….the last option will be discussed momentarily…the first 2 are self-explanatory so let's focus on the third option, Voice Chat…once I click on Voice Chat I'm presented with yet another set of options. Voice Chats Received & Voice Chats Sent…here's where all of this fun gets started! To begin, I click on Voice Chats Received & am presented with a page showing a list of all voice messages sent to me by other classmates during our class session…in addition, I'm given several options at this point. Play All, Play Newest First & Play Oldest First…depending on which option I choose, I hear either a constant stream of voices or just those voices that have been added most recently or those voices that were recorded longest ago…moving right along…I click on each voice message individually & am able to play it back…if someone has left me a voice message I get some more choices. Reply Now, Save (so that I can respond at another time), Delete (to delete it. & Share (so that others can listen to it too)….the last option will be discussed momentarily…the first 2 are self-explanatory so let's focus on the last option—Share….once I click on Share I'm presented with yet another set of options. Invite Others (to invite other classmates whose avatars may not be appearing onscreen. & Share Options…from here I choose how I want others to hear my message—Playback Window Only (my voice only), Speaker Only (my voice plus background sounds. or Full Audio (my voice plus background sounds plus anything else going on behind me)—& then click Share…& voila! My message is now heard by all who have chosen to participate in our voice chat session! Just remember that if you want your voice chat session to end quickly then you should choose Playback Window Only otherwise you might find yourself still participating in this voice chat session days later! You can also choose whether you want your voice chat session to be recorded or not—it's your choice!! Another benefit of integrating these two products together which is worthy of consideration is the ability to record your entire class session! So how does one do this? Well, here's how I do it…first of all, I log onto GoToTraining & open up my course so that my avatar appears along with my classmates' avatars onscreen… Next, I click on my avatar & either choose "My Profile" or "My Settings". If I choose "My Profile", I'm presented with a profile screen that identifies me by name & shows my picture along with my email address & any comments I've made that others have seen…if I choose "My Settings" I'm presented with another page that shows my user ID & password along with my name…moving right along…I click on Session Recordings at the top of my profile page & am then presented with 3 options. Recordings List (to view recordings), Record Now & Record Later….the last option will be discussed momentarily…the first 2 are self-explanatory so let's focus on the third option, Record Now….once I click on Record Now I'm presented with yet another set of options.
