Integration of Chatter and Getform

College students are always looking for ways to get more work done. Computer applications are one of the most popular ways to accomplish this goal. Technology is advancing at an unparalleled rate, and everyday more and more features are being added to software. Today's software has capabilities that may or may not be useful for a college student.

In order to understand what Chatter and Getform are, it is necessary to understand how they are integrated in the Writer application that comes with Microsoft Office. Writer is an word processing program designed for use on a Microsoft Windows XP computer. Writer can be used for academic and personal use.

Writer was first introduced in 1986 as a stand-alone word processor. However, it was later integrated into Microsoft Office 97, which contained Word and Excel. After its integration into Microsoft Office, Writer incorporated all of the features of Word, including document creation, editing, and formatting abilities. Writer also included the ability to create tables, insert equations, and use a thesaurus.

However, Writer had difficulty competing in the market because of some missing features, such as a spell checker and grammar checker. These features were added later in Microsoft Office 2001. Microsoft added these features to help meet Writer's competition from OpenOffice.org, which was gaining popularity during this time. Writer also became a part of Office 2003.

Chatter is a writing assistant that is integrated into Writer. Chatter can be found on the left side of the screen in Writer's toolbar. It allows a writer to check spelling, grammar, and style within a document to make sure it is free of errors before printing it out or sending it to someone else. It is particularly helpful if the writer knows little about spelling and grammar; otherwise, the writer would have to look up every error in a dictionary, or find the rule in a grammar book. This takes time and makes the process less efficient.

Chatter also gives writers options for style. It suggests words that the writer may have unintentionally misspelled in the document. This is helpful because it eliminates spelling errors as well as grammatical ones. However, it can be frustrating if the writer wants to ignore certain suggestions because it will not allow them to ignore them all at once. Chatter also allows users who want to use different styles of writing (such as British English versus American English. to do so by simply clicking on a different option in Chatter's Style menu.

Getform is another component of Writer that is integrated into the product. Getform allows users to create surveys and other forms for their own personal or professional use. Forms are created by typing information into specific boxes on a page, then adding questions or instructions by using the tools provided on the Help menu when creating a form. Once created, forms can be saved as files with extension .docm or .dotm so they can be opened again later or shared with others easily. The important thing to know is that forms must be saved as file types compatible with Word or Excel; otherwise they cannot be opened again or shared with others using those programs.

Both Chatter and Getform are useful tools that help writers edit their documents more efficiently. By making suggestions for spelling, grammar and style while a writer is typing, Chatter makes the process easier; writers do not have to stop typing to look up words that they didn't know were misspelled, nor do they have to look up rules for punctuation or grammar in order to fix their mistakes. GetForm makes creating surveys and forms simple; instead of having to draw out charts or make lists manually, GetForm does it all for the user by creating charts and adding information like dates and locations automatically when required. Although these features are great for writers who have little experience with grammar and spelling, GetForm is not as effective for experienced editors who already know what they are doing; these users might find that GetForm takes up too much time and does not help enough to be worth its space in their already busy computers.
