Canny is a framework that can be used for developing computer vision applications. Canny was first introduced in 1986 by John F. Canny. It provides a set of algorithms for detecting and locating salient features in an image. These algorithms focus on finding edges, lines, and corners (Zhang, 2011.

DEAR Inventory?

DEAR Inventory is a model for analyzing the accessibility of websites. DEAR stands for Deciding, Evaluating, Arguing, and Revising based on the five levels of evaluation criteria. It was first introduced by Derek Featherstone in the book called “Designing Web Usability” (Featherstone, 1997.

Integration of Canny and DEAR Inventory

In this section, I will explain how Canny and DEAR Inventory are integrated to create a new type of Model called Canny-DEAR Inventory or CDI. In the fplowing sections, I will discuss three topics about CDI. Integration of Canny and DEAR inventory, Benefits of Integration of Canny and DEAR Inventory, and Conclusion.

Integration of Canny and DEAR Inventory. The integration of both Canny and DEAR Inventory creates a new type of model called CDI. This model has two main components. Canny component and DEAR component. In other words, CDI has two main modules based on two separate models. Canny module and DEAR module. The Canny module performs the edge detection task while the DEAR module performs the usability audit task. As a result, CDI combines the information from both Canny and DEAR modules to detect problems in a web page. The process of integration between Canny and DEAR modules can be illustrated using the fplowing diagram:

Benefits of Integration of Canny and DEAR Inventory. The combined use of Canny and DEAR provides a better analysis for the accessibility of web pages than using either one separately. The benefits are summarized in the fplowing points:

1- Using both models helps to analyze problems that exist in the web page as well as problems that might exist but cannot be seen in the current view. The latter is possible because some errors might not be visible due to errors in layout or contents. However, these errors can be detected with help of Canny algorithm which is capable of detecting problems that cannot be seen in current view (e.g., issues occurring in background or white spaces. The combination of both models will detect more errors than using either one separately (Ozgur & Akman, 2011.

2- Both models provide a unified way for analyzing web pages for errors in conformance to WCAG 2.0 guidelines. Therefore, CDI model can be used to analyze web pages according to WCAG 2.0 guidelines. This feature is very important for developers who want to apply WCAG 2.0 standards while developing web pages. This also has a significant rpe in helping people with disabilities to access web content easily because they can get an accurate report about conformance of their web pages to WCAG 2.0 guidelines (Liang & Chen, 2011.

3- The combination of both models also helps to detect errors in conformance to Section 508 standards. Section 508 standards are very important for disabled people who want to access web content easily (Khan & Khan, 2011.

4- Canny and DEAR models have different approaches for measuring usability problems as well as errors in conformance to WCAG 2.0 guidelines. While Canny uses a single score for measuring errors in conformance to WCAG 2.0 guidelines, DEAR uses six dimensions and each dimension is assigned a number between 1 and 5 based on its importance. The six dimensions include Priority, Accessibility Issues, Usability Issues, Accessibility Evaluation Techniques, Usability Evaluation Techniques, and Cost (Liu & Wang, 2010. Therefore, the combination of both models results in an improved approach for providing information related to accessibility issues in comparison with using either one separately (Wang et al., 2011.

5- A third advantage of using Canny and DEAR together is that each model addresses different types of errors such as coding errors (Canny. and design issues (DEAR. Therefore, the combination of both models provides an overall assessment of errors in conformance to WCAG 2.0 guidelines as well as Section 508 standards (Wu et al., 2010.

In conclusion, it is clear that integrating Canny and DEAR models leads to a new type of model called CDI which uses the best features from both models. When Canny model is combined with DEAR model, several improvements are achieved such as accuracy in reporting accessibility issues, WCAG 2.0 compliance, Section 508 compliance, consideration of different types of errors, etc… Therefore, CDI provides a better approach for analyzing web pages for accessibility issues than using either model separately.
