Braintree, founded in 2007 in Chicago by Bryan Johnson and team, is an American company that offers payment processing services for online businesses. In December 2014, PayPal announced that it would acquire Braintree in a cash and stock deal worth $800 million. PayPal planned to fpd Braintree into its core business as part of its move toward mobile payments. The acquisition was completed in September 2015.

In November 2015, Braintree acquired Venmo (a payment service of C.V.T., Inc.. for $26.2 million.
