The Braintree company was founded in 2007 by Bryan Johnson, who had previously founded the company behind BradsDeals.com, a deal-of-the-day website selling discount gift cards. The company started in Chicago with two initial employees. Johnson and another developer.
Braintree provides a Software as a Service (SaaS. payment solution for online businesses. It allows companies to accept payments through credit cards, PayPal, Venmo, Bitcoin, and other methods. The company also provides tools for recurring billing and invoicing. A notable feature of Braintree is its mobile app, which allows merchants to accept payments on mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones.
Google Groups is an email forum system that was created in 1996, and has since been discontinued. It was replaced by the Google Groups platform. This system allowed multiple users to discuss topics within one forum. Each topic would belong to a forum, or "group." The content of every group was organized hierarchically, so users could easily find old and new content.
On June 21, 2014, Braintree acquired Google's payments solution for small merchants, Google Checkout. As part of the acquisition, Braintree announced that it would be integrating the service into its own payment solution.
Google Checkout was originally launched as part of Google's attempt to get its search engine to rival popular search engines at the time. It provided users with a way to use their credit card to make purchases from participating online merchants and pay for them using a single account. However, when Google launched Google Wallet in 2011, Google neglected Google Checkout in favor of its own solution. This led many consumers to feel confused about whether they should use Google Checkout or Google Wallet. Meanwhile, other competing e-commerce services such as PayPal gained popularity, and because Google Checkout did not support PayPal purchases, some customers chose not to use Google Checkout despite agreeing to do so on the merchant's website.
Merchants who already use Google Checkout as their primary payment service will be able to switch over to Braintree and remain seamlessly integrated with Google Wallet via the Braintree integration with Google Wallet. Merchants who already use both Braintree and Google Wallet will have to choose between their two existing integrations if they wish to use both systems.
Google Checkout was integrated with Gmail and the DoubleClick advertising platform, so this integration will allow merchants who use those services to accept payments directly from customers' Gmail accounts through the DoubleClick platform. Customers can make purchases from a merchant's site without having to leave the Gmail interface to find the merchant's contact information or place an order.
Users can store their payment information on the Google Wallet website, which will allow them to make purchases from any device where they can log into their Google account.
While the Gmail interface does not provide a way for users to add a credit card manually, it does provide a link to the customer's profile on the merchant's site. From there, the customer can enter the card information manually or update it using their current billing information stored on the site.
