Integration of Braintree and Basin

"Braintree and Basin are two small towns that have been in conflict with each other because of their history and customs. However, through the years they have learned to overcome their differences and work together for the betterment of the two communities."

"The towns have realized that they can no longer afford to be separate entities and must begin working together to benefit both."

    What is Braintree?

"Braintree is a town located in Norfolk County, Massachusetts. It is part of the Greater Boston area. The population of Braintree in 2000 was 17,727 residents. It covers an area of 5.9 square miles and has a density of 2,153 people per square mile."

    What is Basin?

"Basin is a large town located in Plymouth County, Massachusetts. It is the southernmost township in the Commonwealth. The population was 3,303 residents in 2000. It covers an area of 22.2 square miles and has a density of 142 people per square mile.""After the settlers came to this area, they found that the land was perfect for farming. They began raising crops and animals to sell. They had a crop failure in 1630 and lost all of their crops and had to move away. They returned the following year with more men and established settlements at Braintree and later at Weymouth.""As time went on more people moved into these areas and by 1775 they had grown into small villages. At this time they were still known as Braintree and Weymouth.""The communities eventually grew into two different towns, each with its own government and laws. They continued to grow together until the Great Depression, when many industries began moving out of the area and into larger cities. This resulted in many people moving away from Massachusetts.""The population decreased considerably throughout the decade. The two communities looked towards each other for help during this difficult time, but neither one was willing to make concessions. Eventually they turned away from each other and slowly began to rebuild their communities.""In 1971 there was a merger between Braintree and Weymouth. The two towns worked together to become one community called Braintree-Weymouth.""The citizens of Braintree-Weymouth have adopted policies that benefit both communities. There are no longer any boundaries between the two and cooperation has become a way of life for the residents."

    Integration of Braintree and Basin

"In 1970 the citizens of Braintree and Weymouth approved a measure that would allow the two communities to merge on January 1, 1975. Six years after the merger took place, there were still considerable boundaries that separated the two communities.""The people of Braintree-Weymouth did not want to go back to having separate governments, so they decided to form one governmental body.""Three elected officials from Weymouth would serve on the Braintree side of the ballot and three elected officials from Braintree would serve on the Weymouth side. Each community would also elect one member to serve on the Board of Selectmen.""During this time there was a lot of controversy over how things should be run in the new town. There were many disagreements about what should be done with parks, schools and other public services. The people wanted everyone to share equally in these facilities, but it was not possible since they were such different communities.""In 1985 a committee was formed that made recommendations on what should be done with these public services. They suggested that some things that are unique to each town could remain separate while other things could be shared between towns.""The committee recommended that the towns share police, fire, public library, school administration, highway department, planning board, health services and parks.""Some years later another committee was formed that would determine whether or not the merger had been successful.""They determined that since the towns were so different before the merger, it was unrealistic to expect them to be exactly alike now. However, they reviewed each of the areas where services were provided jointly and found that significant progress had been made towards making both communities equal partners in those services.""They also determined that there remained some areas where progress had not yet been made and both towns needed to work on becoming equal partners in those areas."

Benefits of Integration of Braintree and Basin

"Since merging in 1970, both towns have benefited greatly from working together to provide services for their residents.""The schools are now much more stable because there are fewer students who are bused into the districts each year.""There have also been some financial benefits for both communities since merging together, including lower taxes for residents."
