Bitly is a service that allows users to shorten and track URLs. Shortened URLs can be shared via email, Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites. It was created in 2008 by Mark Josephson and Peter Szulczewski. Bitly is used by thousands of people every day to shorten and track links. The service has a very simple interface that allows users to create shortened links easily. There’s no need to login or sign up for an account to start using Bitly. All you have to do is copy and paste the URL you’d like to shorten into the ‘Shorten URL’ box at the top of the page, give your link a custom name, add a title for the page (optional), choose a category for your link (optional. and click on ‘Shorten URL’. After you have clicked on this button, you will be redirected to the page with your shortened link which will have the same title as the one you provided before. The URL will look something like this. bit.ly/1upynVA. This number will change every time you shorten a new link so you’ll always be able to tell which links have been shortened by you and which ones haven’t. You can also use bitly to track how many clicks each of your links has received since the last time you checked by clicking on its shortened link in the list of all of your shortened links on the dashboard page. You can also use bitly to track how many clicks each of your links has received since the last time you checked by clicking on its shortened link in the list of all of your shortened links on the dashboard page at bitly.com/dashboard. If you want to see how many unique visitors have visited your site from each shortened link or which links receive the most clicks, you can do that by clicking on the ‘Visitors’ or ‘Clicks’ tab, respectively. Another useful feature that bitly offers users is the option to copy your bitly shortlinks so you can post them on your website or blog or share them with your friends via Facebook, Twitter or email. To do this, simply click on any of your shortened links on any page at bitly.com/dashboard or on any of your shortened links in an email or on Facebook or Twitter, copy the URL from your browser’s address bar or from whatever app you’re using to share it, go back to bitly.com/dashboard and click on the text box at the top of the page where you can switch between shortening new links and viewing existing ones by clicking on ‘Manage Links’ in the menu on the top right of the screen. On this page, you will see all of your shortened links in your dashboard in a simple list format with a preview image for each of them next to its title. If you want to copy any of these links simply click on it once, then click again twice or three times depending on how many times you want to copy it (or press Ctrl+C. The number next to each link will change when you click on it so you know how many copies you’ve made but this number only tells you how many times you’ve copied that link, not how many copies there are altogether so pay attention when copying more than one copy of a link as you may end up making more than one copy accidentally if you don’t double check what number is next to each link before copying it. Once you’ve made your selection simply paste these links wherever you want them (Ctrl+V. As mentioned earlier, Bitly supports integration with social media networks such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Google+, Tumblr and App.net so if you want to share any of your shortened links with your friends through these sites just copy them and paste them onto these sites as if they were regular URLs (Ctrl+V. To view how many clicks each of your social network posts has received simply go back to bitly.com/dashboard, select ‘Social Networks’ from the menu on top of the page and click ‘View Clicks’ under each post in your timeline under ‘Social Networks’ which will display all of your posts made on each social network selected from the menu below it in chronpogical order from top-to-bottom fplowed by how many clicks they’ve received per post underneath them from left-to-right as shown below:
