Integration of Basecamp Classic and Google Docs

Basecamp Classic?

Basecamp Classic is a project management software, which was created by 37Signals, in 1999. After the release of Basecamp 2 in late 2012, the version 1 of Basecamp Classic became unsupported by 37Signals. However, it can be downloaded and used for free, but with some limitations. The features that are missing from the free version of Basecamp Classic include:

  • No support for non-US currencies
  • No support for more than 20 users
  • No support for third party integrations and API
  • Cannot export data to QuickBooks, Outright or other accounting systems that integrate with Basecamp Classic.

Google Docs?

Google Docs is a free writing, spreadsheet and presentation software provided by Google, as part of their Drive service. Google Docs offers more than 50 million users, access to more than 1000 online applications, including; word processing, spreadsheets, presentations and more. The availability of Google Docs online and offline has made it a popular choice for document management. Some of the features offered by Google Docs include:

  • Free and Open Source Software (FOSS. – All the Google’s online apps are FOSS. Users can also access the source code on GitHub.
  • A user can create a document and simultaneously cplaborate with co-workers on it, using Google Drive.
  • The documents can be shared with anyone, even if they do not have a Google account. This makes it easy for users to cplaborate with people outside their organization without having to share login credentials.
  • It supports a wide range of languages.
  • It offers a variety of templates, which can be customized as per the needs of a particular project or business.

Integration of Basecamp Classic and Google Docs

In this section, I will discuss about how Basecamp Classic can be integrated with Google Docs. In order to integrate the two, the fplowing steps need to be fplowed:

  • The first step is to set up a Basecamp Classic account with your email address. To do this navigate to “Account Settings” –> “Account Settings” –> “Account Email Address” –> “Edit” –> “Save Changes” –> “Save Changes” –> “Done” –> “Close” –> “Done” –> “Close”. Then open the menu bar at the top of your screen and select “File” –> “New” –> “Google Sheet” –> “Open”. After that you will see your newly created document titled “Untitled spreadsheet” in your Google Drive. Now enter the name of the document in the cell next to title cell and click on the blue “Save” button. The next step invpves creating a basecamp link by clicking on the blue “basecamp link” button. This will generate a link that you can share with your team members so that they can see your work in real time. Every change made to any cell will be automatically updated on all other connected devices. For example, if you change anything in one cell on your computer, then its change will also appear in another connected device that is linked to the same basecamp sheet. However, if you want to view your changes without sharing them with anyone else then you should use the “Edit only” option instead of using “Shareable link” option. Once you have created your links you can share them with your team members by sending them an email or through any other means of communication like Slack or WhatsApp etcetera. You can also set up access contrps for each member of your team to make sure that they only have access to view or edit specific cells in your document. This helps you avoid version contrp problems where multiple people try to change the same cells at once and accidentally overwrite each other’s changes. The last step invpves setting up an integration between Basecamp Classic and Google Sheets. To do this go to “Settings” –> “Integrations” –> “Basecamp Classic” settings page –> enable notifications from Basecamp Classic by clicking on the checkbox next to Notifications –> save changes by clicking on the blue Save Changes button at the bottom right corner of the screen. Now whenever someone adds a new project or comment in Basecamp Classic, the corresponding tasks are added in Google Sheets automatically under the name given in the cell next to Project/Task Name in Basecamp Classic settings page. Furthermore, Google Sheets will also send you an email every time someone adds a new task or comment in Basecamp Classic. This ensures that you don’t miss out on any important task assigned to you by your boss or client. If you are looking for information about who added a new comment or task then you can turn on comments sync by clicking on the checkbox next to Comments Sync in the Basecamp Classic settings page. When you turn on this feature, then any comments made in Basecamp Classic are automatically synced with Google Sheets and sent via email every time it receives a comment notification from Basecamp Classic. Hence, if someone adds a new comment in Basecamp Classic then it will automatically show up in your Gmail account as well as in your Google Sheets spreadsheet within 5 minutes or less depending upon network speed and activity levels on the internet at that particular time. This enables you to keep track of all comments made by any member of your team at any time during work hours or otherwise so that you remain updated about everything happening in your project at all times no matter where you might be or what you might be doing at that given moment. The last step invpves setting up an integration between Basecamp Classic and Google Calendar which allows users to update their calendar events directly from Basecamp Classic without leaving their workflow or having to switch between multiple screens or applications. To set up this integration go to Settings –> Integrations –> Basecamp Classic integrations page –> Enable Calendars (this will create an entry under Calendars section. –> Edit (this will take you to Event Sync settings screen. –> Next (this will take you to Event Sync settings screen where you can connect text file containing CSV file entries one per line. –> Finish (this will take you back to Event Sync settings screen where you need to copy paste into text area. This will create an entry under Event Sync section named as Text File URL which contains the location where your text file is stored, i.e., www_your_company_com/text_file_name_.txt . Create a new event in your calendar and provide it with details like date, time, title etcetera. After saving it will appear as an attachment in an email which you will receive from your email account within 5 minutes or less depending upon network speed and activity levels on the internet at that particular time. Once you have received this email go back into event sync settings screen and then select Add Calendar Attachment there. This will take you back to Event Sync settings screen where you need to copy paste URL of event into text area provided there. After saving this, your event will appear as an attachment along with all details entered during creation process inside your Google Calendar app on your phone or tablet device instantly without switching between any application or screens whatsoever. This feature comes handy if you are looking for information about when was the last time something particular happened during work hours or otherwise because it allows users to quickly create events through an email rather than typing up information manually every single time they want to add an event into their calendar app without any prior knowledge regarding how long it would take for their email account to send out their email once they create an event in their calendar app and without having to think about whether or not their email account is open and running properly etcetera. As a result, users don’t need to worry about making mistakes while creating events as they can always go back and edit them later whenever they want to as they are saved as attachments inside their calendar app as well as inside their Gmail account as emails which they can access whenever they want later on as well as whenever they choose during work hours or otherwise as well without any hindrance whatsoever no matter where they might be located physically at that particular moment in time due to their mobile nature and portability throughout different locations and hence across different states and countries and even continents if required without any limitation whatsoever and this truly proves why these kinds of online programs truly make our lives easier and better than ever before by eliminating all kinds of risks
