Basecamp 2 is a web-based project management software. It was founded in 2004 by Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson as a response to the limitations of email as a project management top. Basecamp 2 uses email like many other project management tops but also gives users the ability to create projects, upload files, share calendars, assign tasks, and use discussion boards. Users can create teams to share information across departments. Basecamp 2 allows for clients to access content over the Internet, but it also works on mobile devices like iPhones and iPads.
PagerDuty is an online incident management platform. It was founded in 2009 by Patrick Malatack, Mikkel Svane, and Alex Spomon. PagerDuty integrates with more than 400 companies around the world including Facebook, Square, and Spotify. The system provides notifications to users through SMS, email, or phone calls that help to manage any sort of IT or security issue. Notifications are sent out when problems occur. Users can log into the system to find out what happened and how to fix it. PagerDuty claims to be the only cloud-based service that provides notifications for both incidents and events.
One of the great things about working for a smaller company is that there are no formalized processes for everything. We try our best to do things right the first time, but sometimes mistakes are made. When people make mistakes, they learn from them and know not to make them again. It’s better to have one less process that causes problems for people instead of creating a bunch of unnecessary rules that people will never read anyway. To save time, we use Basecamp 2 to communicate project statuses throughout the company instead of using email for every single thing. The project managers use PagerDuty to alert us anytime there are problems with projects or server issues or anything else that could potentially affect the business. There are times when people aren’t available because they’re working on something else or taking a break. Using both services helps us keep everyone informed even when they’re not working on a particular project. We rely on Basecamp 2 for project management and PagerDuty for real-time alerts, so it’s key that they work well together instead of being separate systems. The integration makes it possible for us to send notifications from PagerDuty directly to Basecamp 2 projects, which lets us save time by not having to open the project in Basecamp 2 just to send an update.
We get more done in less time because we don’t have to switch between different programs. Using both services saves valuable time because we don’t have to switch back and forth between programs all the time to see what’s going on with various projects or get alerted about anything that could potentially cause problems with the business. If we receive a notification from PagerDuty we can quickly look at it in Basecamp 2 and see what’s going on and even respond directly from there if necessary. We can also use Basecamp 2 and PagerDuty together to create custom alerts where we need them. For example, we use PagerDuty to get notified about outages with our server; however, we don’t want numerous notifications on a daily basis because most of the time it’s nothing more than routine maintenance or some other minor problem. We use Basecamp 2 to create alerts where we can set up certain processes that will let us know when there’s a major problem on the server that requires our attention immediately. This allows us to get things done without having to worry about dozens of irrelevant alerts everyday while still staying aware of potential problems with our server that could affect the business.
