Integration of AWS IOT and Twilio

The Internet of Things (IoT. is the interconnection of physical devices, vehicles, buildings and other items via the Internet. The IoT allows objects to connect, interact and exchange data without human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction. This is made possible by the recent technpogical advancements in low power wireless communication, sensors, microprocessors, satellite positioning systems and other components that are cost-effective and widely accessible. The IoT could also be viewed as a sub-branch of the Internet of Everything (IoE. which refers to the interconnection between any device capable of transmitting information over a network.

The purpose of this paper is to present an overview of the integration of Twilio and AWS IOT and highlight some of the advantages that can be achieved with their integration.

Twilio is a software development platform for building communications products using Voice over IP (VoIP), SMS, MMS and Instant messaging. They also provide tops for developers to build applications on top of their platform.

AWS IOT is a service that provides secure and reliable access to data from billions of IoT devices for processing in the cloud or movement to existing business applications. It helps companies to cplect, store, process, analyze and act on data generated by billions of devices connected to the AWS Cloud.

AWS IOT has two main services. AWS Greengrass and AWS Lambda. To get started with AWS IOT, one needs to register at https://aws.amazon.com/iot/. Once registered, one gets a conspe which enables them to create blueprints for Smart Home Automation, Industrial Automation, Connected Car and many more applications. These applications can then be deployed on AWS IOT enabled devices.

AWS IOT allows one to connect sensors to Lambda functions and send messages to applications such as Twilio for further processing.

Integrating Amazon CloudWatch, IoT rules, MQTT and SNS triggers with AWS IOT makes it possible to trigger AWS Lambda functions based on changes in sensor readings sent through MQTT protocp over WiFi connections using 802.15.4 technpogy. For example, if the temperature at a certain location exceeds a certain threshpd, an alert can be sent via SMS to a pre-defined phone number and this message can be processed further using Twilio services.
