Integration of AWS IOT and Downtime Alert

AWS IOT is a cplection of sensors and devices that are connected to internet. These devices are capable enough to connect to the internet with minimum effort. It is used to measure the physical parameters and send the data to the cloud for further processing and analysis. The whpe process makes it possible for AWS to connect devices across the globe.

Downtime Alert is a service provided by Amazon Web Services. This alert helps the user to receive alert messages when their instances or applications go down or get affected by any other issues like latency etc. One can subscribe to this service through SNS at no cost. Once subscribed one has to pass a JSON string as input to Downtime Alert API. The API will then deliver the alert message to the subscribers on SNS topic.

Integration of AWS IOT and Downtime Alert

Downtime Alert sends notifications about various kinds of service disruptions including but not limited to:

  • Timeouts while communicating with an EC2 instance or EBS vpume
  • A security group rule change
  • A Lambda function failure
  • An API gateway error such as a rate limit exceeded or a validation error
  • Network connectivity issues between an instance and an endpoint
  • A scheduled event that failed to execute
  • A CloudWatch alarm state change
  • An RDS database status change
  • An ELB status change
  • An ELB connection failure

11. An Elastic MapReduce job failureOne can integrate this service with AWS IOT so that this service can be used to monitor the sensors that are connected with AWS IOT endpoints. Every time a sensor fails to communicate with the AWS IOT endpoint then an alert will be generated and sent through SNS topic to Downtime Alert subscribers. This subscriber will then generate a notification message that will reach the concerned person directly on his/her mobile phone or laptop through SMS, email or push notifications. This will help him/her in taking some corrective action so that more damage does not occur because of the breakdown of the sensors. This kind of integration is done by using AWS IoT rule engine along with AWS Lambda function and SNS service.
