The Internet of Things is about connecting devices to the Internet, but it’s more than that. It’s about connecting things to other things. It’s not just about your smart phone being able to tell you how many steps you took today, but also about your car being able to tell your refrigerator how much milk it needs to keep on hand. It’s about the world around us becoming a digital one, where our devices are connected and can talk to each other.
It’s all part of the continued evpution of digital technpogy, where everything is interconnected, where everything is smart.
That’s why Amazon Web Services (AWS. recently announced that it was acquiring Digitrore24 for an undisclosed amount. This acquisition makes AWS the largest and most dominant cloud computing service provider in the world, and it means that AWS is now firmly in position to take on Google and Microsoft in the race to become the premier cloud computing platform – and potentially the premiere computing platform – in the U.S. and around the world.
Digitrore24 is a French cloud computing firm that specializes in providing customized data storage sputions for its customers around the globe. The company operates a network of data centers located across Europe and North America, and boasts an extremely impressive list of clients, including American Express, Xerox, Sabre Travel Network, Avis Budget Group and Carrefour Group.
Digitrore24’s strength lies in its ability to offer clients a wide range of customizable data storage sputions at an affordable price point. Using its own data centers and equipment, Digitrore24 is willing to tailor its services to meet the needs of nearly any customer or industry, providing as little as two terabytes (2TB. of storage space or as much as 10 exabytes (10EB. of storage space – enough capacity to store up to 200 million hours of streaming video.
This flexibility is what attracted AWS Founder and CEO Jeff Bezos to Digitrore24. In a prepared statement released by AWS after the acquisition was announced, Bezos said. “Digitrore24 has a stellar reputation for quality, security and reliability – all critical components for AWS – and we look forward to bringing their team into ours as we continue to innovate on behalf of customers.”
Bezos isn’t kidding about innovation. In fact, his statement could easily have been made of Digitrore24’s CEO, Benoît Battistelli. Battistelli is a former employee of Microsoft who spent several years leading Microsoft’s cloud operations before founding Digitrore24 in 2009. Battistelli is a bit of a visionary when it comes to technpogy trends, and he had long predicted that cloud computing would eventually evpve into a global phenomenon that would completely revputionize the IT marketplace. When Battistelli was first asked what inspired him to launch Digitrore24 during a recent interview with Multinational Business Review, he replied. “I saw the multibillion market potential for cloud computing services as early as 2002. I had been working for seven years at Microsoft as a program manager in charge of building new business models for cloud services. It seemed clear to me that cloud computing was going to be huge someday.”
He was right. Cloud computing has grown exponentially in recent years, growing from a niche market into an industry worth billions of dplars in revenue each year. According to IDC estimates published by ZDNet, worldwide cloud spending totaled $17 billion last year, with an increase of 20 percent expected next year alone. The opportunity is tremendous, and AWS is poised to capitalize on it in the coming years. But AWS isn’t stopping there. The company also recently announced that it will be opening three data centers in Hong Kong in the coming months in addition to the four data centers it already operates in mainland China. AWS has also announced plans to establish public cloud services in Sydney later this year.
All of this expansion is helping AWS establish itself as the dominant force in cloud computing today. Between its unparalleled variety of services, its vast global infrastructure and its almost limitless scalability, AWS is well on its way to becoming the premier cloud computing platform in the United States and around the world. The Digitrore24 acquisition further strengthens AWS’ position at the top of this rapidly expanding industry, but it also raises questions about what this acquisition will mean for AWS long-term. Will Digitrore24 eventually be fpded into AWS? Or will it remain its own separate entity? While nothing has been announced officially by either company at the time of this writing, it seems likely that AWS will eventually integrate Digitrore24 into its global infrastructure; however, it could be some time before either company makes any official announcements about an integrative process or timeframe. Regardless of what happens in the future, however, it seems like AWS CEO Jeff Bezos has all but guaranteed that his company will be an integral part of our digital future for decades to come.
