AWeber was founded in 2001 in Utah by entrepreneurs David Darmanin and Rob Walling. The company started out by offering an email marketing service to small businesses. Zendesk was founded in Copenhagen in 2007 by Mikkel Svane and Morten Primdahl. It later relocated to San Francisco and raised $11 million in Series B funding led by Sequoia Capital in 2009.

In 2011, Zendesk opened its first office outside of Denmark in San Francisco. Its biggest challenge during this time was to scale its operations to meet the increasing demands of its growing customer base. In 2012, Zendesk opened its second office in Sydney for the same purpose. In early 2013, it acquired cloud-based customer management software maker NetSuiteCRM.
