Create an outline for an article about the expansion of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s collection:

  • What is The Metropolitan Museum of Art?
  • What is the expansion of the museum’s collection?
  • How is the collection expanded?
  • How is this expansion different from previous expansions?

A/B. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the largest museums in the world with millions of objects in its collection. These objects include art works of various types, such as paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings. In recent years, the museum has been expanding its collection of contemporary art. This includes both large-scale installations and site-specific installations.

A/B . The expansion project began in 2011 with the acquisition of 750 works of contemporary art. The museum has acquired thousands of additional works since then. These include video installations, photographs, paintings, drawings, and sculptures. The current focus is on acquiring new works by artists who are not well known or who are emerging. Some of the more recent acquisitions include “Tao Te Ching”, an installation created by Chinese artist Xu Bing in 2012, and “Untitled (Big Ball)”, a sculpture by Scottish artist David Mach that was created in 1974. Both pieces are on display in the museum’s American Wing. This is the first time that either piece is being displayed outside of a museum in Europe. Other more recent works include “The Hand That Feeds You” by Kendell Geers, “Vermeer’s Hat” by Maurizio Cattelan & Pierpaolo Ferrari, and “Black Light” by Dana Schutz. Each piece has been purchased through the museum’s Acquisitions Committee. The committee is made up of curators from different departments within the museum. It also includes two guest curators who are invited each year from within and outside of New York City. The museum’s collection now includes over 6 million objects, including 16,000 works of modern and contemporary art. The museum remains open to all people regardless of their background or financial situation. Nearly 30% of visitors to the museum are free because they receive discounted admission or pay what they can afford.
A/B . The Metropolitan Museum of Art remains one of the most popular museums in the world. It has also become one of the most important museums for contemporary art with its focus on acquiring new works by emerging artists.
