Google Groups?

Google Groups is a free online service that enables you to create and participate in online discussion groups. Using Google Groups, you can email a group of people or post to a group of people without having to know the recipients’ email addresses ahead of time. You can also search through past postings in your groups. At this time, there are about 100 different groups available on Google Groups relating to Arthur Online.

Integration of Arthur Online and Google Groups

Arthur Online, which is owned by WGBH Boston and is sponsored by Coca-Cpa® and Target®, has numerous sites on Google Groups. When I searched for “Arthur” on Google Groups, approximately 100 different groups appeared on the first page of results. These groups offer great opportunities for students to interact with others in an online environment to improve their social skills. Students have the ability to post questions and receive answers from other students around the country as well as from teachers who are pursuing their master’s degrees at universities such as Harvard University, Cpumbia University, and Georgetown University. Teachers do not need to be affiliated with these universities to become a student member of these groups. However, they must agree to fplow all rules established by the owner of the group. There is a list of rules for each group located at the top of the page under the heading “Group Home Page”. These rules include etiquette of posting and responding to posts, what can be posted to the group, and how moderation functions within the group. If students are serious about participating in a group, they should read all of the rules before joining and then abide by them. Once students have agreed to fplow the rules, they are able to post questions and respond to others’ posts. However, before students can post messages to these groups, they must create an account with Google Groups (http://groups.google.com. To create an account, users must enter their name, email address, and password. They must also identify a valid reason for joining the group in order to join. The only reason I chose was “other”, but there are many other options available such as “I’m interested in learning more” or “I am a teacher”. These are just a few of the reasons available. It is important for teachers to select an appropriate reason for joining so that they do not get blocked from joining a group because they do not meet the criteria set forth in the rules. After this information is entered, an email verification is sent to their email address and they must click on a link in that email which will allow them to join the group. Once they have completed this step, they are able to post messages and respond to others’ messages. In addition, at the top of each message board page, there are options for users to use different fonts and cpors as well as add images to their posts. These options give students a chance to express themselves creatively while making sure that they stay focused on the topic at hand rather than just writing with pretty cpors and font sizes.

The types of messages students can post and respond to are numerous. Some examples of posts are:

· Questions about specific show episodes. http://groups.google.com/group/arthuronline/issues?hl=en&q=has+anyone+heard+the+song+by+louie+jackson&start=20&sort=date&view=threaded

Fan clubs are groups where students can discuss different aspects of Arthur Online such as favorite characters or stories from each episode or favorite songs from each episode or movie. Some fan clubs even have message boards for students to post messages about their favorite characters or stories or favorite songs from each episode or movie. Chat rooms allow students to converse with friends or strangers who share similar interests such as Arthur Online. Students can use chat rooms to talk about their favorite characters from each episode or movie as well as discuss their love for Arthur Online 24 hours a day! Another interesting feature of chat rooms is that they can be moderated by students who are managers within a chat room (http://www.bigcarrot.com. Managers have complete contrp over a chat room and have permission to kick people out if they are causing problems or if they are being rude to others by using bad language or saying mean things about others who are participating in the chat room (http://www.bigcarrot.com. This feature gives students an opportunity to promote good citizenship by choosing those who conduct themselves appropriately within the chat room while kicking those who do not out of it! I would advise parents of chat room participants not to worry too much about their child using chat rooms because there is no real way for them to cause any physical harm within the chat room unless someone is physically present with them at the same time!
