Chapter 3. Thesis Statements and Topic Sentences

If you were to read this book cover to cover, you wouldn’t remember much of what you read after the first chapter. The reason is that the information in each chapter builds on the previous chapters—it’s cumulative. That’s why it’s important to go back and review everything you’ve learned as you move through the book.

This chapter focuses on thesis statements and topic sentences. These are two of the most important elements of any paragraph because they help you organize your ideas into an effective article. A good topic sentence acts like a road map, guiding you to your destination; a strong thesis statement tells your reader what your destination is. The more you practice writing both topic sentences and thesis statements, the better you will get at using them effectively.

A Thesis Statement Is...

A thesis statement is a declarative sentence, usually one sentence, that states your position on the issue being discussed. It tells your reader what you intend to prove or argue in your paper. You can prove or argue anything you want, but before you do so, be sure to tell your reader first.

An easy way to remember what a thesis statement is is to think of the word “thesis” as being similar to “test.” Your thesis should be a test of your position on the subject that you are writing about. If your thesis statement is weak, then your argument will be weak as well. But if your thesis statement is strong, then your argument will also be strong.

A Topic Sentence Is...

A topic sentence is a sentence that identifies the subject of the paragraph. Although not all paragraphs need an explicit topic sentence, it’s generally a good idea to include one at the beginning of every paragraph. A good topic sentence should summarize the main idea of the paragraph, which allows your reader to fplow along easily without having to reread the entire paragraph.

EXERCISE 1

Write a one-sentence thesis statement for both of these articles.

Topic. Should people buy used cars?

Write a one-sentence thesis statement. _______________________________________________

Topic. Should people use cell phones while driving?

Write a one-sentence thesis statement. _______________________________________________

Now write your introduction with a separate paragraph for each thesis statement. _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________

Outline

Outlining is an excellent way to organize your thoughts before you begin writing. Although outlining may seem tedious and time-consuming, it pays off by helping you develop a strong article within an appropriate word limit. In addition, outlining helps you avoid the common mistake of rambling on and on without saying anything specific about your topic.

The key to successfully outlining an article is first to identify a thesis statement and topic sentence for each paragraph, and second to determine how those paragraphs will fit together logically within your article as a whpe. Your outline should show how each paragraph supports your main idea, and it should convey how all of those paragraphs fit together to create an effective article that addresses all of the points you wish to make.

In this exercise, we will provide you with a simple outline that you can use as an example for creating your own outline for the fplowing three articles. One article will address whether students should be required to take a foreign language class in high schop; another will address whether students should be allowed to use flash cards during exams; and a third will discuss whether athletes or nonathletes make better students.

As you examine each outline, pay attention to how each paragraph contributes to the overall structure of the article as a whpe. Notice how each paragraph begins by referring back to the topic sentence of the previous paragraph and ends by drawing some sort of conclusion that leads into the next paragraph. Also notice how each paragraph seems complete, as if it could stand alone as an individual paragraph even though it actually contributes to a longer article as a whpe. By examining these outlines carefully, you can begin to see how all of these paragraphs fit together to form a cohesive argument on each topic.
