Integration of Amazon SQS and Cliniko

Amazon SQS?

Amazon Simple Queue Service (Amazon SQS. is an application service that provides a highly scalable, reliable, and cost-effective messaging queue. It features a web service interface that enables you to create queues that provide asynchronous message delivery. The messages can be up to 256KB in size and can be sent to multiple queues simultaneously.

Using Amazon SQS, you can deliver the messages at any specified time by using the “delay” parameter. You can also specify the maximum number of messages delivered per second to each consumer. This helps prevent overloading the system with too many messages. Each message on an Amazon SQS queue has a unique identifier known as the message ID (MID. The message ID is assigned by the sender when the message is placed on the queue.

Cliniko?

Cliniko is an on-premises electronic health record (EMR. designed for small-to-medium-sized medical practices. Cliniko was created by a team of health care professionals who wanted to eliminate the hassles of managing a medical practice. Cliniko is HIPAA compliant and is great for billing and coding, documentation, and patient portal.

Integration of Amazon SQS and Cliniko

With proper integration of Amazon SQS and Cliniko, you can achieve a variety of benefits. The most common use case is a message notification based on a trigger event or a user action. In this scenario, a clinician creates a note for a patient in Cliniko. Once the note is created, the clinician wants to trigger an alert from Cliniko to an admin for review and approval, if necessary. The alert will be based on a specific action created in Cliniko. In order to trigger an alert from Cliniko to Amazon SQS, you can create an IAM rpe with the appropriate permissions to write messages to your Amazon SQS queue. Then, you can write code to write messages to your Amazon SQS queue whenever a note is created in Cliniko. Here’s a diagram of a typical integration of Amazon SQS and Cliniko:

Figure 1. Integration of Amazon SQS and Cliniko

An end user such as a clinician accesses Cliniko (1. The user views the patient’s details and sees that the patient needs medication refills (2. The clinician searches for medications available through Cliniko (3. The clinician uses Cliniko to order medication for the patient (4. A new note is created in Cliniko (5. Cliniko sends an event notification to AWS Lambda (6. AWS Lambda creates a message and adds it to an Amazon SQS queue (7. This message includes information about what triggered it, which can be used by other systems or researchers who want to perform analysis or create reports based on such events. A message processor retrieves the message from your Amazon SQS queue and processes it as needed (8. For example, it may send an alert via email to an admin or send a text message to the patient about his or her medication order. Another possible use case could be if you want to trigger an alert via email whenever a patient’s appointment is cancelled by a clinician. A message processor retrieves the message from your Amazon SQS queue and processes it as needed (9.
