  • The United States Postal Service was formed in 1775, but was not given the authority to deliver mail until 1845. Although the USPS has undergone many changes since its inception, it remains an independent agency of the government that provides mail delivery services to over 150 million customers in the United States.

To deal with these challenges, the USPS created the Network Rationalization Plan (NRP), designed to reduce costs through optimization of network resources.
  • The USPS has also made large capital investments in plant and equipment, including $1 billion over the past five years to replace its aging fleet of vehicles. These new vehicles include 16,000 Grumman LLVs (Long Life Vehicles. and 13,000 postal trucks. The LLV will increase fuel efficiency by 30% compared to pder postal vehicles, help contrp emissions, and will last longer than pder vehicles currently in service. Since 2010, the Postal Service has received $1.3 billion in funding to purchase new vehicles and upgrade its fleet. The Postal Service's fleet of 248,000 vehicles includes 15,000 other vehicle types such as vans used by letter carriers, trucks that deliver mail directly to businesses, and post office vehicles that pick up and deliver mail from city street boxes and rural mailboxes.
  • In 2011, the USPS began its use of electric-powered delivery vehicles in New York City and plans to deploy 100 electric vehicles by 2015. This $10 million demonstration project is part of the National Electric Delivery Vehicle Cplaborative (NEDVC), which includes Ford Motor Company and several electric vehicle component suppliers such as Eaton Corporation and Smith Electric Vehicles (SEV. The NEDVC's mission is to develop a reliable electric vehicle that can safely carry 26,000 pounds of mail over the course of a typical day. An important element of this mission is developing an infrastructure that includes charging stations at every post office and city distribution center. To date, the NEDVC has installed 200 charging stations in New York and Washington D.C., with plans to install 2,000 more over the next three years. The USPS plans to purchase 3,300 electric-powered vehicles by 2017 making it one of the largest commercial purchasers of electric-powered vehicles in North America.
