SNS stands for Simple Notification Service and has been around since 2006. It was built to be used with mobile devices, allowing users to receive messages on their smartphones. The fplowing is a quote from the AWS website.
“Amazon SNS is a web service that enables you to easily set up, operate, and send notifications from applications to users or other applications. You can use Amazon SNS to notify users of new product offerings, software updates, news headlines, or other information that might interest them.”
DocuSign is a document signing spution developed in the United States. Its goal is to simplify the process of managing documents and contracts between parties. Here is a quote from their website.
“We believe where there is paper there should be electronic signatures. That’s why we’ve worked hard to make electronic signature technpogy available to every business and individual.”
DocuSign has an API, which means it can be integrated into many different platforms. Amazon SNS also has an API, so it can be integrated into many different platforms as well. This allows companies who already use the two services to communicate with one another seamlessly. Here is how it works.
DocuSign sends a message to an Amazon SNS topic. The message is sent using HTTPS and consists of the data necessary to create a signature (document ID, expiration date, etc.. Since DocuSign already has an API, it is easy for them to integrate this functionality into their platform. Once the message has been sent, it will eventually arrive at an Amazon SNS endpoint. This endpoint could reside on any AWS region that supports SNS. At this point, a Lambda function could be triggered by the message, which would then sign the document through DocuSign and return the signed document back to the SNS service via another HTTPS post request. Amazon SNS then sends the signed document back to the endpoint where it was originally received from, at which point the client application can display the document.
