  • Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2. is a web service that provides resizable compute capacity in the cloud. It is designed to make web-scale computing easier for developers.
  • Amazon EC2 eliminates the need to overprovision or upgrade existing hardware, so you can launch more instances faster and increase compute capacity without upfront costs or long-term commitments.
  • Amazon EC2 offers developers access to a high-availability, highly reliable computing environment that features a broad range of instance types—from micro instances with pricing starting at 1 cent per hour, to large memory and storage optimized instances that are capable of handling most enterprise-sized workloads.
  • With Amazon EC2, there is no need to plan around capacity constraints — you pay only for what you use.
  • In addition to the standard networking protocps, Amazon EC2 supports the open source stack of protocps used by Xzazu, including OpenSSH, Samba/CIFS, rsync and Lightweight Directory Access Protocp (LDAP.
  • Amazon EC2 enables you to build and host your applications on a scalable, high-performance, self-service, and cost-efficient cloud infrastructure.
  • At the heart of Amazon EC2 is a scalable compute capacity, which can be easily expanded or shrunk as needed. Amazon EC2 makes it very easy to increase or decrease capacity within minutes, without any significant impact on the performance of your applications.
  • In addition to provisioning capacity and scaling it up or down as needed, Amazon EC2 also allows you to launch and terminate virtual servers quickly and easily using its simple API calls or web interface. You can start small, but scale up when your application requires additional resources without having to shut down your application or compromising on performance.
  • With Amazon EC2, instances start within seconds and you can scale up or down within minutes. This eliminates underutilized infrastructure and eliminates the need for you to spend time planning capacity requirements for peak demand. As your application’s load changes, you can adjust the number of instances required to handle the load with no downtime or disruption to your application’s availability.
  • While Amazon EC2 allows you to scale up on an hourly basis, if you need more time than that to scale up your application’s compute capacity, you can use Spot Instances to buy extra computing power at a discount compared to On-Demand rates. For example, if you are running low on compute capacity, you can launch Spot Instances instead of On-Demand Instances and wait for a few hours until the instances start running before scaling up your application’s compute capacity. You pay only for the compute capacity used by your running Spot Instances during this time period — even if the Spot price has gone up by then. If your application doesn’t require any additional compute capacity during this time period, you’ll pay only for the Spot Instance usage itself — not the full On-Demand Instance price that would have been charged otherwise.
  • As a result of these capabilities, development teams can launch their applications on an infrastructure that meets their current needs and rapidly scale up individual services until they are stable enough for production deployment. This helps enable development teams to launch new applications faster than ever before and significantly reduces the time needed for application testing and deployment cycles.
