EC2 launched on November 25, 2006, with a free-of-charge usage tier. In April 2012, the free usage tier was replaced by a new tier where an hourly fee is charged only for the time actually used, not including additional features available for purchase.

By default, your EC2 instance will be assigned a public IP address that allows you to remotely access it. Each instance also comes with a private IP address that can only be accessed from within the EC2 network itself. To reach a private IP address from outside the network, you must use either the Elastic IP service or the NAT Gateway service. Both services assign you an external IP address that is always accessible from the Internet—even if the instance is terminated and restarted later at a different physical location within the EC2 network. If you want to assign multiple internal addresses to a single instance, you can use both services at the same time.

The AWS Management Conspe provides one-click launch configurations for popular Linux distributions such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), CentOS, Ubuntu Long Term Support (LTS), Oracle Linux, and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES. These configurations include utilities necessary to connect to the Internet and other AWS services, along with tops for package installation and configuration management. Also offered are specialised images for specific use cases such as WordPress blogs and Magento e-commerce sites, which are pre-installed and configured with popular open source apps. For Windows servers, you can select from several publicly available images from Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Standard and Datacenter Editions, as well as Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Standard and Enterprise Editions.
