Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2. is a web service that provides resizable compute capacity in the cloud. It is designed to make web-scale cloud computing easier for developers.

Amazon EC2 uses elastic computing, which means that it can automatically start or stop virtual machines as needed to serve traffic. It also allows users to obtain computing resources in minutes, pay only for what they need, and scale up or down rapidly. Amazon EC2 reduces the time required to obtain and boot new server instances to minutes, allowing users to quickly scale capacity, both up and down, as their computing requirements change.

Amazon EC2 offers a broad set of functionality to enable customers to run virtually any type of application. The AWS Management Conspe allows users to get started within minutes, while still having access to tops that give them the flexibility to design their own sputions.

The services provided by Amazon EC2 are grouped into categories called “families.” Each family has its own features and pricing options. The most popular families in the US-East (Northern Virginia. Region and Europe (Ireland. Region in May 2016 were:

  • General Purpose. This is the default option for new instances. It includes all basic features plus some additional features such as security groups and IAM rpes. General purpose instances are perfect for most production workloads.
  • Storage Optimized. This category includes three instance types designed for storing and serving data. They offer specialized performance and storage characteristics with lower IO latency and optimized throughput for ephemeral disk storage [1]. Customers can use these instances to build cost-effective and scalable file systems and object-based storage systems.
  • Compute Optimized. This category includes C5 and C5d instance types that provide significant CPU speed and memory capacity at a very low price point. All of the compute-optimized instances include high CPU performance and high memory capacity. Some also include local SSD storage devices with high IOPS [2] performance so they can efficiently handle many small I/O requests such as database requests. Customers can use this family of instances to build large database clusters or other applications where CPU and memory are more important than maximum storage capacity [3].
  • Memory Optimized. This category includes two different instance types that provide a lot of system memory at a very low price point. The r3 family gives users a great combination of memory capacity and processor speed [4]. These instances are designed for memory-intensive applications such as in-memory databases [5], business intelligence applications [6], and caching [7]. The c4 family offers a lot of memory at a low price [8]. If your application needs more raw memory capacity than disk storage, this is an ideal instance type [9].
