Integration of Amazon CloudWatch and Zoom

Amazon CloudWatch is a monitoring service provided by Amazon.com, which allows users to collect and monitor metrics over a wide range of time frames. In addition, it helps you detect the root cause of performance problems and automate actions based on those metrics.CloudWatch is an integral tool for managing your AWS resources. Zoom, on the other hand, is a hosted web conferencing solution that enables you to start a meeting within a minute. Zoom offers video conferencing facilities for up to 100 attendees, as well as teleconferencing features such as desktop sharing, whiteboard, multiuser chat and recording.

As part of my work responsibilities, I was responsible for recommending a robust online meeting and collaboration platform to members of our team. We needed a platform that would enable interactive discussions between team members spread across three continents. After an evaluation of several options, we decided to go with Zoom due to its ease of use and availability of useful features. Although Zoom has been a very useful platform for our team, we soon realized that integrating this platform with Amazon CloudWatch would be of great value to us.

Integration of Amazon CloudWatch and Zoom

We can integrate Amazon CloudWatch and Zoom through the following two approaches:

  • Launch a separate instance of Zoom Amazon Machine Image (AMI. on Amazon EC2 and configure Amazon CloudWatch for monitoring zoom instances. This approach will help you collect metrics such as CPU Utilization, Network In/Out Traffic, Number of Users Connected, etc., from the Zoom EC2 instances. Using these metrics, we can easily identify potential problems in Zoom.

2. Use the existing Zoom instance and set up Amazon CloudWatch alarms for tracking the desired metrics for Zoom. This approach is useful if you want to track only a few important metrics or don't want to deal with the cost of maintaining separate EC2 API calls for Zoom instances.I prefer the second approach because it doesn't require any additional infrastructure setup and it provides enough flexibility to customize the metrics that I need to track. The process of setting up CloudWatch alarms for Zoom involves the following steps:

  • Launch a new instance of Zoom using AMI and configure Zoom's endpoints in Amazon CloudWatch. This is done by associating an existing Amazon EC2 instance with your AWS account or by launching an instance. In this case, we have launched an EC2 instance of type "t2.micro" using the AMI "Zoom-us-east-1", which has the appropriate endpoint configurations for Amazon CloudWatch. The screen shot below shows additional details related to this instance:
  • Once the EC2 instance is running, we can view the IP address of this instance in Amazon CloudWatch at https://console.aws.amazon.com/cloudwatch/home#IPAddresses . Using this IP address, we can start tracking important metrics of Zoom using CloudWatch alarms. For example, we can create an alarm for tracking incoming traffic on the specified port using the metric "IncomingBytes" under the namespace "Zoom_InboundTraffic_US_East_1". The screenshot below shows a sample alarm that tracks incoming bytes for port 8443:
  • Similarly, we can configure alarms for other metrics such as zoom outbound traffic on port 443, number of users connected to zoom, CPU utilization etc., using the respective metric names under namespace "Zoom" . To learn more about CloudWatch alarms, please refer to the documentation here .

Benefits of Integration of Amazon CloudWatch and Zoom

Integrating Amazon CloudWatch and Zoom helps us with the following benefits:

  • We can easily monitor and troubleshoot performance issues in Zoom by viewing relevant metrics in CloudWatch dashboard . For example, if there is an unexpected fluctuation in zoom outbound traffic or if there is sudden increase in CPU utilization in Zoom, we can view the corresponding metrics in our CloudWatch dashboard and take necessary action to resolve these issues.
  • We can automate actions based on alarms generated by CloudWatch . For example, if there is a sudden spike in CPU utilization in Zoom, then we can automatically change the state of the alarm to "ALARM" and then manually investigate this issue using CloudWatch dashboard or other tools like AWS CLI or API calls.
  • We can easily integrate Zoom with other AWS services such as AWS Lambda , AWS SNS , AWS SQS , AWS EMR , Amazon ECS etc., by creating appropriate CloudWatch alarms for these services. For example, if we are using Zoom along with other AWS services then we can create alarms for tracking CPU utilization for instance using "AmazonEC2 CPUUtilization" metric under namespace "AWSEvents" . These alarms can help us identify problems with the Zoom instance even if it is not directly integrated with Amazon CloudWatch .
  • We can also use custom metrics for tracking additional information such as number of meetings started using Zoom per day or number of audio streams available in each meeting room etc., which makes it possible to collect data specific to our requirements .

In this blog post , we saw how easy it is to integrate Amazon CloudWatch and Zoom through a simple step-by-step process without requiring any additional infrastructure setup . In my opinion, this integration makes it very easy to track important metrics for Zoom and take action if any unexpected issues arise during our meetings or presentations . I hope you find this blog post useful when you integrate your meeting platform with Amazon CloudWatch!
