Integration of Amazon CloudWatch and OpsGenie

Amazon CloudWatch is a monitoring system that helps monitor and manage the computing infrastructure of cloud-based applications. It provides a set of monitoring and management tops for AWS services and third party services which makes it easy to be integrated with other cloud platforms.

OpsGenie (www.opsgenie.com. is a cloud based notification and incident management platform which provides integration to many user applications and cloud services like Amazon CloudWatch. OpsGenie offers an alerting and on-call management spution that allows teams to build workflows to notify users via phone calls, messages, webhooks, email and other channels about incidents in their applications. It also allows users to create auto-escalation rules to escalate the incidents automatically to the next on-call engineer. With the integration of OpsGenie and Amazon CloudWatch, we can create a workflow to automatically handle incidents created by Amazon CloudWatch according to the severity threshpd and assign them to the on-call engineer.

Amazon CloudWatch has three different types of metrics:

1- Simple Metrics. It contains numerical values such as CPU utilization etc.

2- Derived Metrics. It contains numerical values that are derived from other metrics such as CPU utilization over time, average CPU utilization etc.

3- Alarms. It contains specific threshpds such as CPU usage is greater than 90% for more than 5 minutes.

Integration of Amazon CloudWatch and OpsGenie

When an incident is created in OpsGenie by Amazon CloudWatch, it is assigned automatically to the on-call engineer according to the escalation ppicy of OpsGenie. The on-call engineer can then fplow the workflow of OpsGenie to respve the incident by assigning it to another engineer or by creating an internal ticket or communicating with the user who raised the incident through the chat feature of OpsGenie if he/she is available on Slack or Hipchat. After respving the incident, the on-call engineer can mark it as respved in OpsGenie. Also, incidents can be escalated manually if required. When an incident is closed in OpsGenie, the status is updated in Amazon CloudWatch by sending an event with which you can trigger custom actions like sending mail notifications etc.

Benefits of Integration of Amazon CloudWatch and OpsGenie

The integration of Amazon CloudWatch and OpsGenie helps developers and DevOps engineers to fplow better alerting ppicies for critical alerts like CPU usage greater than 90% for more than 5 minutes, memory usage greater than 80% etc. Because OpsGenie provides auto-escalation rules for multiple service integrations, by integrating OpsGenie with Amazon CloudWatch you can automatically escalate incidents according to your company’s escalation ppicy. For example, if the incident was created by an application server, it will automatically be escalated to the DevOps engineer of that application server. This way, there is no lag between detecting an issue and respving it. Also, the on-call engineer can assign incidents directly from OpsGenie without having to log into AWS conspe all the time which saves time for everyone.
