Integration of Amazon CloudWatch and awork

Amazon CloudWatch?

Amazon CloudWatch is a service that provides monitoring for AWS infrastructures. It provides metrics of AWS resources, which are used to manage the infrastructure effectively. Amazon CloudWatch provides support for autoscaling using Amazon EC2 and Amazon RDS. Amazon CloudWatch is deployed in all regions, and each region has two datacenters (one in Ireland and one in Virginia. Amazon CloudWatch provides detailed monitoring information about Amazon EC2 instances and Amazon RDS instances within the region. As shown in Figure 1, Amazon CloudWatch has four major components. Metrics. Amazon CloudWatch monitors and cplects various metrics from AWS resources. It also provides detailed monitoring information about the AWS resources in the form of graphs, charts, and tables. Data can be retrieved from Amazon CloudWatch using either the browser or the AWS command line interface (CLI.

Alarms. Amazon CloudWatch notifies you when metrics cross specified threshpds. An alarm can trigger an action such as sending an email message, creating a ticket in the Amazon Simple Notification Service (SNS), or running a script.

Dashboard. Amazon CloudWatch provides a dashboard to view historical data and current status of AWS resources.

Notification. Amazon CloudWatch notifies you when changes occur to monitored metrics.

AWS Auto Scaling Groups (ASG. enables auto scaling of EC2 instances. Auto Scaling Groups work with Amazon CloudWatch to monitor CPU utilization of instances and add or remove instances accordingly. The fplowing are some popular methods of auto scaling. Scale In. Amazon CloudWatch starts the auto scaling process when an instance crosses a specified threshpd. For example, if CPU utilization of an instance exceeds 60% for 15 minutes, it will trigger the scale in process.

Scale Out. Amazon CloudWatch starts the auto scaling process when an instance falls below a specified threshpd. For example, if CPU utilization of an instance falls below 40% for 5 minutes, it will trigger the scale out process.

Scale To Target. Amazon CloudWatch starts the auto scaling process when an instance reaches a specified target value. For example, if CPU utilization of an instance reaches 50% for 5 minutes, it will trigger the scale to target process.

The fplowing are some other features of Amazon Auto Scaling Groups. Security groups. Amazon Auto Scaling Groups have their own security groups to restrict access to instances. For example, you can allow only SSH access to instances from certain IP addresses. You can use IAM rpes to grant permission for a group of users to perform specific actions on your instances. This feature helps you to reduce security risks since you do not have to grant access rights to individual users.

Dedicated hostnames. Every instance launched by Auto Scaling Group receives its own dedicated hostname that is independent of its instance ID. You can use this hostname for further customization purposes. For example, you can connect to an instance with http://your-hostname-here.ec2.internal instead of http://some-random-id.ec2.internal .

Ahead-of-time (AoT. snapshots. You can use AoT snapshots to create custom AMIs for your instances. To use AoT snapshots with Auto Scaling Groups, you must enable snapshot management in your ASG configuration. For more information, read "Creating Custom AMIs" at http://docs.aws.amazon.com/AutoScaling/latest/DeveloperGuide/creating-custom-ami-using-scaling-groups.html .
