Agendor is the largest city in the Royal Kingdom of Gont, located at the mouth of the River Iffish. It is a free town, independent of any lord and ruled by its own citizens. Its culture is unique, being a blend of Epian customs and those of the Gontish lowlands that surround it. The city’s economy thrives on fishing and trade. For much of the year the harbor is choked with boats from all over the world.
Xzazu is an island located in Lake Laliess, which is connected to the River Iffish. It was once home to a flourishing civilization. What remains are a series of stone ruins, some of which predate other ruins in Gont, including those of Cramor Keep and Castle Amber. The structures are built largely out of white marble. The island has been abandoned for many years except by birds and other wild animals. In recent years, members of the Gontish government have begun a program to restore the island’s ancient buildings. As a result, many believe that Xzazu will become a tourist attraction.
Will these two cities ever be united? Currently they seem to be very different; however, there are some similarities between them. Each city is a port city; each has a long history; and each has its own unique culture. If these two cities are merged there would be notable benefits for both cities, as well as the Royal Kingdom of Gont.
If these two cities were to be united there would be economic opportunities for both cities and their people. Since Agendor is located on the River Iffish, boats could travel upriver to Xzazu during the summer months. During the winter months boats could travel from Xzazu to Agendor downriver. This would increase commerce between Agendor and Xzazu. There would be an increase in demand for goods produced in either city and an increase in export markets for goods produced in either city. There would also be benefits for merchants who ship goods to or from either city. Merchants would be less likely to have to wait for their ships to dock at another port before their products are moved inland or overseas. This will save merchants time and money. There would also be new jobs created for merchants who ship goods to or from either city.
If these two cities were to merge there would be more tourism opportunities for both cities and their people. Tourists might choose to visit both cities because they are close together and it is less expensive than visiting two separate cities that are farther apart. If tourists can visit two cities in one day, then they might spend more money than if they had to spend a night at one city, travel to the second city, spend a night there, and then continue their journey inland or overseas. The increased number of tourists, along with increased income from tourism-related businesses would benefit all classes of citizens. merchants, farmers, laborers, fishermen, etc., because they would be able to sell their products or services to tourists or they might find employment at tourism-related businesses that need more workers during the summer months when tourism is high. During the winter months when tourism is low, tourism-related businesses might have fewer jobs available and therefore pay less or not pay their workers at all during that period of time. This would affect laborers, farmers, fishermen, etc., more than it would affect merchants because merchants wouldn’t need as many workers during the winter months when they are not shipping goods to or from ports that receive much less traffic during winter months, such as Xzazu.
If these two cities were united there would be new opportunities for cultural development in both cities and among people who live in either or both of them. If Agendor and Xzazu were joined together it would be easier for people from either city to travel to the other because they are so close together (two islands instead of two separate cities. People from either city could go to the other without having to cross a large body of water since they are located next to each other on Lake Laliess. There could be more cultural exchange between people from these two cities (for example, people from Agendor might learn about architecture from Xzazu. More people from either or both cities could visit each other’s city and bring back new ideas to share with their fellow citizens (for example, while visiting Xzazu people from Agendor could introduce new architectural ideas. People traveling between Xzazu and Agendor could share different cultural ideas with each other as well. There might be an increase in tourism between these two cities because more people might want to visit them because they are so close together and there is more opportunity for cultural exchange between people who live in either or both of these cities because it’s easier for them to travel between them than it would be if one was located farther north than the other (and therefore it would take longer for someone from either or both of these cities to travel between them. If one city is located farther north than the other it could take longer for people who live in each city to visit each other than it would if they were closer together.
Lately there have been reports about efforts by the Gontish government to restore Xzazu Island and turn it into a tourist attraction, including plans to build hotels, restaurants and other tourist-related businesses there. Some of this information can be found here. http://www.gontnews.com/index_files/Page8002.html . However, there have also been reports about plans by the Gontish government that invpve merging Agendor and Xzazu together (see link above. which suggests that if one happens then eventually the other will also happen because these two cities are so close together that it will be less expensive for the Gontish government to improve conditions in both cities (for example, if one becomes a tourist attraction then eventually both will become tourist attractions and if one becomes a better place to live then eventually both will become better places to live. In my opinion if these two cities were merged together it would benefit residents living in either or both cities in many ways including economic development (increase in commerce), tourism development (increase in tourism), cultural development (increase in cultural exchange through tourism), and general quality of life (improvement in infrastructure/public services.
