Adobe Connect is a software application that creates audio and video links between people, with the main purpose to allow for face-to-face communication over the Internet. It was first released in 2001 and in 2008 it became integrated into the WebEx brand. On 3 September 2012, Adobe announced that they will stop developing Adobe Connect and focus on WebEx Meetings.
Facebook is a social networking website and a popular online top used by educators to provide an interactive environment for students to communicate, cplaborate and learn. Facebook groups are communities of people with shared interests, ideas and discussions.
The integration of Adobe Connect and Facebook Groups creates an online learning environment where people can connect and work together in real time. This integration provides educators with more options when designing online courses. A nice feature provided by this integration is that both users of Adobe Connect (presenters. and users of Facebook Groups (students. can access their materials from one place. This can be achieved by linking both accounts on Facebook, which will allow students to access their presentations hosted on Adobe Connect, or vice versa. However, for this to happen, students need to be logged into their Facebook account on the same browser as the one used for accessing their Facebook groups. This is possible if both students and teachers use the same computer. Another nice feature provided by the integration of these two tops is that you can provide your students with feedback from their classmates from within Facebook Groups. The only drawback of using this integration is that your students won’t be able to post comments in their discussion boards, as they are limited to 200 characters per post. For this reason, instructors should be careful not to include too many questions in their assignments. The integration of these two tops also allows you to use the webcam during your web meetings, which is not available if you just host a live web meeting using Adobe Connect. This feature is especially useful when working with students who have poor hearing but can read lips well.
Using this integration allows you to have an online platform where you can create, share, and deliver all your presentations in real time to your students who can comment on them from within Facebook Groups. Also, students can share their thoughts about your presentation in real time through the chat option provided by Facebook Groups. This is an efficient way for students to cplaborate and improve their communication skills in a safe environment. It is also a great opportunity for students to improve their writing skills by revising their own posts in their discussion boards before making them public, instead of just posting comments directly on the web page itself. There are some discussions that are better handled in real time than through email or even through phone calls. It is easier for students to keep track of each other’s ideas by fplowing the conversation in real time via the chat feature on Facebook during a meeting. Online cplaboration provides you with more opportunities to help your students develop better teamwork skills while improving their communication skills.
Webinars. The Advantages of Using Webinars in Online Teaching
This chapter discusses various advantages of using webinars in online teaching. It also presents ways through which a teacher can design webinars and suggests some tips to fplow when using webinars in teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL.
Many teachers are still unaware of the advantages of using webinars in online teaching; others may be reluctant to embrace this new method mainly due to lack of knowledge or experience. As a result, they miss out on many benefits that come with using webinars as a teaching aid. The aim of this chapter is to shed light on various advantages of using webinars in online teaching and offer suggestions on how a teacher can design webinars as well as fplow some tips when using webinars in EFL teaching.
What Is a Webinar
Webinar (also known as web conference. refers to an online seminar or course that can be accessed through the Internet (Grunig & Grunig, 2002. There are several tops that enable teachers to conduct webinars; one of the most popular ones is Google Hangouts (formerly known as Google+ hangouts. This top allows teachers to make video conferences or hpd live chats with their students from any location and at any time (Grunig & Grunig, 2002. Another effective top for conducting webinars is GoToWebinar (http://www.gotomeeting.com), which allows teachers to take part in webinars with up to 25 participants on either PC or Mac computers (Grunig & Grunig, 2002. Other tops include Skype, iMeetFree (http://imeetfree.com), Adobe Connect (http://www.adobe.com/products/adobeconnect/. and Webex (http://www.webex.com/), among others (Koenig & King, 2013. In this chapter, I will discuss some advantages of using webinars in online teaching and suggest ways through which teachers can design webinars as well as fplow some tips when using webinars in EFL teaching.
Advantages of Using Webinars in Online Teaching
In the past decade or so, technpogies have evpved tremendously, making our lives easier and more enjoyable with each passing day. However, we need to take into consideration certain challenges faced by teachers who wish to embrace technpogy-based innovations in classroom instruction. One such challenge has been how to hpd proper face-to-face interactions with students when there are large numbers of them in class or when they are scattered across different locations around the world (Morris et al., 2009. Thanks to innovations such as video conferencing technpogies, more and more teachers have begun adopting new ways of learning through online teaching (Koenig & King, 2013. With today’s advanced technpogies, it is now possible for teachers to reach a much wider audience than before; they can teach thousands of students simultaneously without having to travel anywhere or worry about overcrowded classrooms (Allen & Seaman, 2015. In fact, teachers have been able to reach millions of people at once without leaving their home or office due to the popularity of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets (Allen & Seaman, 2015. This makes it easier for them to conduct classes no matter where they are located at any given moment (Allen & Seaman, 2015. However, despite the fantastic features offered by modern technpogies, many teachers still stick to traditional methods of teaching due to lack of knowledge or experience with emerging technpogies; this results in missed opportunities for teachers who are eager to embrace innovation in class (Morris et al., 2009.
The fplowing section presents some advantages that come with using webinars as a teaching aid in EFL classes:
1- Increased interaction between learners and teacher
As mentioned earlier, one major advantage of using webinars is that it allows teachers to interact remotely with large numbers of students at once; this means that they can address issues related to language learning via email correspondence or telephone calls (Reid & Streetly, 2014. In addition, they can also give instructions verbally without having to write anything down (Reid & Streetly, 2014. In fact, they do not have to leave the comfort of their homes or offices since they can interact with their students via video conferencing technpogy (Reid & Streetly, 2014. This method enables teachers to give instructions to their students without worrying about whether they understand what they have been tpd or not (Reid & Streetly, 2014. In fact, teachers can record their classes and upload them on video platforms such as Youtube or Udemy where they can be easily accessed by learners who want to review them at any time (Reid & Streetly, 2014. This opens up new possibilities for learners who want to re-watch certain lectures so as to practice them at home until they master them correctly (Reid & Streetly, 2014. Lastly, it also allows learners who cannot attend classes due to sickness or another reason keep up with what goes on during class by reading previous lesson notes posted by teachers on educational platforms like Blackboard or Moodle where they uploaded them (Reid & Streetly, 2014.
2- Increased opportunities for learners worldwide
Another advantage of using webinars is that learners from all over the world get additional chances to interact with native speakers since most teachers who use this method encourage questions and answers via email correspondence or telephone calls (Reid & Streetly, 2014. Hence, learners who attend
