I: Introduction

Social media marketing is the process of creating and distributing content on social media sites to promote your business or organization. Not only can you utilize social media to market your business, but it can also be an effective way to develop your brand awareness by promoting your products and services. While there are many benefits to utilizing social media for marketing purposes, it comes with its own set of challenges. One of these is making sure you are using the most up to date encoding settings for the social media platform you are using.

II: Body

There are many different ways to encode your videos for social media. Use the following steps to make sure you are using the correct settings for each platform.

Facebook

Facebook allows you to upload videos that are up to 60 minutes in length. It is important to note that if you are uploading a video that is longer than 3 minutes, Facebook will automatically segment the video into shorter clips. When you upload your video, Facebook requires you to set the video’s profile & thumbnail image. If you do not set one, Facebook will use the first frame of the video as its thumbnail. When uploading videos on Facebook, it is very important to know about their encoding settings. Facebook supports three different formats: .mp4, .mov, and .3gp. Facebook has specific requirements for each format. Videos uploaded as .mp4’s must be encoded with H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile Level 4.0 or lower video compression. For .mov files, you must encode them with H.264 or MPEG-4 compression. The recommended encoding parameters for these files are:

Profile: Main@High

Level: 4.0 L4.1 L5 (included)

Encoding Bitrate: 10 Mbps for 1080p (Full HD) and 5 Mbps for 720p (HD)

Keyframe frequency: Every 250 frames (one keyframe every 2 seconds)

Preset: Standard

Frame rate: 23.976 fps (actual frame rate may vary depending on user preference)

Video bitrate: 8 Mbps for 1080p (Full HD) and 4 Mbps for 720p (HD)

Audio channels: Stereo 48 kHz 16-bit or AC-3 48 kHz 16-bit Audio sample rate: 44.1 kHz 16-bit Audio bitrate: 128 kbps AAC 2 channel Audio sampling frequency: 44.1 kHz 16-bit Audio channel count: 2 channel Audio bitrate: 128 kbps AAC 2 channel AAC Low Delay Audio channel count: 2 channel Audio bitrate: 32 kbps AAC Low Delay Video bitrate vs. Frame rate chart Video bitrate vs. Audio channel count chart Recommended encoding settings for .mov files

For .3gp files, you must use a constant bit rate of 64 Kbps and a maximum video resolution of 352 x 288 pixels. These files should be encoded using H.263 or MPEG-4 compression at a video bit rate between 64 Kbps and 1 Mbps (.3gp). All other encoding parameters should be left at default values.
