This article is about Social Media Marketing and how it compares with Search Engine Optimization. If we go back to the 90s, the only way to get your business or product noticed was through Print Advertising, TV or Radio commercials. At the time I was in college and I could not afford those advertisement campaigns so I had to come up with a plan to be successful in advertising my business without spending too much money.
I started thinking of ways to develop a strategy on how to get my small car wash business noticed by others in my community. It was not long before I realized that I had to use the internet to get my name out there. I started reading on how to get on Google and at the same time I would create videos showing how my carwash worked. My goal was to create an online presence that would be noticed by others in my community. I thought that I could get millions of hits just by telling people how great my carwash was. I wanted everyone to know that my carwash was the best there was. So I went live on facebook and youtube letting everyone know how great my carwash was. I did get lots of hits, but unfortunately no one showed up because they did not know where I was located. This was not the best of marketing strategies, but I learned many valuable lessons from this experience.
After this experience I decided to change my marketing strategy. The next time I went live on Facebook and Youtube, but instead of doing it without any preparation, I did it while I had people at my carwash washing cars for free. Everyone was very impressed with my service and they did not want to leave until they all were finished washing their cars. After they were done someone asked me if they could have an ad campaign for their business here at my carwash. They told me that they would pay me every month with no obligations. This is when I realized that I needed better marketing skills in order to grow my small business.
Through this experience I started getting more customers and making more money, but this was just the beginning of my online journey. Over the years I have developed very strong social media skills that have helped me in many ways with many businesses. Today, even though social media is great at marketing your business, it is also very important for you to have good SEO skills in order for you to get the most out of your online marketing campaign.
