Introduction-What is an outline? An outline is an organized presentation of topics for an article or speech. It presents the main points and subtopics for each main topic. Outlining allows one to organize their thoughts, review the material they plan to present, and create an overall structure for their writing. Outlines can also help writers eliminate unnecessary or redundant information. While the way one creates an outline varies, there are some general guidelines that apply to most outlines. These guidelines can be used to create an outline no matter what type of writing project one is working on.

An outline should cover all main ideas and subtopics. One should not forget to include subtopics for subtopics as well. This makes sure that nothing is left out. On the other hand, it is important that one does not include too much information in the outline. If one does not have enough information to include every subtopic, that is okay, but they should have enough information to include at least the most important points. It is best if one has at least three main topics with at least two subtopics for each main topic. That way, they will have enough material to write an effective article or speech. One should also be sure to indicate where transitions are needed, so that it is easier for them to write the article or speech. It can be difficult to determine where transitions are necessary, but there are some general rules that can be followed. Transitions are typically needed when moving from one main topic to another or one subtopic to another. They are also needed after stating an example or providing an explanation. When determining where transitions are needed, one should always keep in mind the purpose of the article or speech they are creating. If it is a persuasive article, transitions are likely needed between almost every main idea or subtopic. On the other hand, if it is an informative article, there may only be transitions between some main ideas or subtopics. The type of article or speech one is writing will affect how they create their outline.
